icon57 Flames WHL Prospects

I just wanted to throw a little love to the Flames prospects in the WHL. It has been brought up in a couple other threads but Mitch Wahl and Ryan Howse are really having excellent seasons. After Wahl didn't get named to the USA jr team I admit I was worried it would hurt his progress. Instead he is having a really strong year, he is 7th in league scoring. Howse has really got me excited! He is a pure goal scorer who is only 18 years old and will only get better. Gaelan Patterson who was drafted as a 19 year old has been a real 2way leader with Saskatoon this season. Lance Bouma is reminding me of a young Steve Ott, he is a super pest but he does have some nice hands as well. Not sure what to think about Spencer Bennett yet. Part of me always wished they would have drafted Brandon Kozun in Bennett's spot, but who knows he is 6'3 with decent hands.

Mitch Wahl: 69 games, 29 goals, 63 assists, 92 points

Ryan Howse: 70 games, 46 goals, 24 assists, 70 points

Gaelan Patterson: 70 games, 26 goals, 33 assists, 59 points

Lance Bouma: 57 games, 14 goals, 29 assists, 43 points, 134 pim

Spencer Bennett: 69 games, 19 goals, 21 assists, 40 points

Thanks for this thread.

But most importantly... we'll be adding Wahl to the Heat next season.

Anybody know when Bouma is expected back in the Giants lineup? He's missed quite awhile now.

Bouma should be back close to the end of the first round, or early second round.

Howse is a pure goal scorer.

When people criticize Calgary for having no offensive minded prospects he always pops in my head as someone who could change that reputation fast. Should be a big time scoring leader on Team Canada at the World Jrs next year....

Claeren.
The kid is pretty amazing. He is also very well trained on the defensive side of the game as well. He plays the PK and the PP. And I believe he leads his team in +/- as well as goals, PP goals, shorthanded goals. Pretty good for a guy on a team with a goal differential of -18.

Howse is one hell of a pick for a 3rd rounder.

Knowing our luck, he'll max out at a Pete Vandermeer-type.

I was going to say dustin boyd - prolific junior scorer, in 3rd round, if he doesnt pan out to be that "homegrown" top 6 forward, boyd comparisons begin

Speaking of Boyd, he's pointless through 6 games in Nashville.

Also playing an average of a minute less a game than in Calgary.

Trotz is obviously mishandling him.

To update on Bouma, he played last night against Kamloops. 1 assist, 4 PIM.

Linemate and leading scorer in playoffs Craig Cunningham on Bouma's return: “I honestly think the biggest difference is having Bouma back on my line,” said Cunningham, a 19-year-old Trail native. “The guy's the unsung hero every night — he creates so much energy for us on the forecheck. Every time I dump the puck into his corner, I know he's going to get it back.”

I hope some of these offensive guys pan out. I am tired of the 3-4 line grinders.

I watched the Vancouver Giants/Kamloops Blazers series the other night. Bouma is like Johan Franzen in front of that net. The coach has assigned him that role and he's damn good at it. He has something like 3 or 4 assists of the 5 goals scored the other night.

Sorry to say 3 Justin 3, but I think Bouma is one of those 3-4 line grinders, but he does his job very well.
