Default iPod Touch - worth it?

I'm debating whether if I should continue to buy iPods after going through 4 iPod Nanos (2 of them used), many of my friends love the Touch but I'm kind of on the fence about them since I have a distaste for iPod's in general. Should I look to the Zunes or Sony music players instead?

Don't own an ipod touch, I have a 120gb classic right now, but I know that as soon as they come out with the next gen of ipod touches, and the capacity is bigger, I will no doubt be buying one. Those things are the coolest gadgets out there imo, and the app store is fantastic. I'd say go for it.

I had a classic Ipod, Nano and a Zune. I just took the plunge with an iPod touch and I cannot say good enough things about it. For the times I want to go on the internet and there's wifi (in class) I can look at CP, email, facebook... whatever. Then there's the apps which are fabulous. There's pretty much everything out there. The games are also pretty fun.

The only downside is that playing a lot of games drains the battery like mad... but that's expected. And also the amount of memory you get for the touch isn't very good for the money you pay. So if you listen to a lot of music then maybe the classic iPod is better. But I don't really listen to a lot of music.

Oh yes, it doesn't have a radio which is a big negative for me. But the retail value on it is probably one of the best for a music player. Usually once you buy them and own it for more than a year they have no value but you can probably sell a used ipod for about $130 bucks.

I dragged my heels until finally getting the Touch last July and (my 1st & only iPod to date) as I didn't want to become just another Apple fanboi but the Touch has certainly converted me. I just regret that I only bought a 16GB model....and am currently bursting at the seams.

While not having a built in radio kinda sucks there are several apps that can be installed that will let you tune into stations all over (I have a free one called FStream that I like).

I don't know what I would do without my Touch now, it goes everywhere with me and I use it constantly - even when at home with my laptop, I am generally using my Touch at the same time. You'll be surprised at how much you enjoy the Touch if you get it, altho I'd be tempted to wait and see if they don't launch a new generation of them later this summer.

I have the iPod Touch gen 1 model - been working great for nearly 2 years now.

Music devices have always been a preference of software to me though. If you like iTunes, the iPod line is great (the touch is awesome simply due to the app market). If you hate iTunes and want to manage your music manually, other devices are probably a better bet.

iPods tend to be behind technologically compared to other music players - even the Zune.

You can use Apple products without being a mouth breathing fanboi - don't let that weigh in on your mind!

When did fanboy start being spelled with an "I"?

I've been on the fence about getting a touch for the last year or so. I really want to get one to use it as an iTunes remote (my mac is networked to the stereo), but don't know how much I'd use it otherwise.

It's just another way to mock fanboys - (do fangirls exist?).

Apple Remote is a pretty sweet bit of software - I can vouch for it. Did you use an Airport Express to network to your stereo?

I would say it's not worth it. Only because you'll want the phone part of it as well.

I bought a touch last year and used it as my iPod for everyday use. Unless you're in a place with wifi all the time, it's kind of useless for online stuff.

The iPhone being tethered to the 3g network doesn't have this restriction obviously.

I was carrying my iPod Touch, and my cell phone everywhere. Now I can carry my iPod and phone in one package.

If you're just looking for an mp3 player, I'd stick with an iPod, but I wouldn't waste the cabbage on a Touch. If you like the features of the touch, I'd go all the way for the iPhone.

I am definietly not an Apple Fanbo"i". But iPods/iPhones are great platforms and do what they do well. That's why I enjoy them.

Yep. Extreme downstairs for the router after I got fed up trying to connect everything with my d-link, and the extreme in the living room for the stereo. Half tempted to pick one up for the garage, too.

As far as the iPhone/ vs iTouch goes, I'd justify the touch long before the phone. Monthly fees are still outrageous in Canada, and if I'm not in the house I have little desire to be surfing the net.

The touch would be nice to keep tabs on email, etc. when a guy's at home while doing yardwork, fixing the car (can't count how many time's I've run back in the house to check an automotive forum for how-tos) watching the game, etc. without going back and forth to the computer.

This might sound stupid, but can you get an adapter for the touch to connect it to a router/wired network connection?

I'd vote the same way on this, the touch seems redundant and aimed towards teenagers whose parents don't want to foot their cell phone bill. The iPhone is way more versatile than the touch and you have it wrapped up with a cell phone.

While the iPhone is more versatile, not everyone wants to pay the minimum $60+/month to use the phone. I have a data plan on my other phone and it's way lower than if I were to use the iPhone.

Wait... what? If you have a data plan on your other phone and it's way lower than $60 a month, why wouldn't you use that same plan on an iPhone? It's not like you have to use a pre-made iPhone plan. You're allowed to use your existing plan instead.

Those crazy "Unlimited Web and Email" addons for $5-$10 aren't data plans, btw.

I adore using it as a remote. I use it for both my music and apple tv and couldn't go without it now.

I think it's worth it. The Touch is pretty cheap now compared to when it first came out, and its awesome to have in the house if you don't have an Iphone or a data plan. It's better than carrying a laptop everywhere you go for quick access to the internet.

I guess if you can afford it, go with the Iphone, but if you can't, I think the Touch isn't a bad subsitute. Although, with the Ipad coming out, maybe you should hold off if you're looking for the internet functionality.

I have one with work which is essentially free. That's why I use a seperate phone and they don't allow the iPhone as a work phone yet.
