Default Question about the Calgary Airport

I'm going to Ghana this summer and just received my flight itinerary and I would fly from Saskatoon to Calgary, arrive in Calgary at 12:17, then leave on a flight to Frankfurt at 13:15, is this enough time to switch flights. I've flown to Europe before, but that was with a school group, and I was wondering how much time is needed. My other stops all look good, 3.5 hours stopped in Frankfurt, then fly to Accra, and almost 3 hours coming back the same way. And coming back through Calgary is over 2 hours.

And random question, they have all the time set as the 24 hour clock, so when it says 13:15, it that 1:15 in the afternoon? and so on.

You clear customs in Europe (I've actually been on that 1:15 Frankfurt flight) so you should be good. You won't even have to go through security again.

Isn't there a direct flight from Saskatoon to Ghana?

Are you sure about the bypass on security in YYC?

What airline are you flying from Saskatoon to YYC on? If it is Westjet then you will have no security in YYC as they use the same pier (D) as Lufthansa.

I'm not sure if the 'A' pier has a full bypass over to the 'D' wing or not though. You would arrive in the 'A' pier if you are flying in on Air Canada.

Edit: Looking at the terminal map on the YYC website I don't see a bypass from A pier all the way over to D. You would have to transit through the secure US departures zone, and I don't see them allowing that.

The one hour should give you enough time.

Problem is it usually doesn't come out exactly like their schedule says.

As long as there's no major delays from Saskatoon, you won't have any problems at all . You'll arrive in A wing, and be able to walk right through to B wing. Don't leave security to get out of A wing, as your walking out you'll see security straight ahead, if you stay to the left, there is a walkway along a biiig glass window.

Your bags will be @ the plane before you. On "hot" connections like that, hot bags are sorted at the flight and driven straight to the aircraft.

But he won't be going to B wing. His flight to Frankfurt is at 1:15pm, that is the Lufthansa flight that departs out of D wing.

Also if he is flying Westjet he will be arriving at the same wing as his next flight, but I don't think that Westjet can check his bag through all the way from Saskatoon (on account of Westjet not being in an alliance with Lufthansa), so he may still need to leave the secured area to get his bag, and recheck it with Lufthansa before going through security again at the D wing to get on the flight.

The more I think about it, you should give yourself more time than 48 minutes D.I.G.

I think the key piece of info missing is who your S'toon - Calgary is with.

You say you have your flight itinerary so I'm assuming a travel agent or some other entity booked your flights for you correct? If it was a travel agent I don't believe they can book flights with too short of a connection time or typically don't book that tight of a connection without checking with you first.

If you're the type of person who doesn't like to deal with flight stress and doesn't like to feel rushed then switch to an earlier flight.

Oh yeah! You'll still be fine though, your bags will be priority and delivered right to the plane. Just don't fk around and you'll get there ok.

(Don't follow my directions to B wing)

If you are Air Canada from Saskatoon that is fine.

If you are Westjet, that is not enough time as you would need get your bags, and re check in with Lufthansa and go through security.

Wouldnt the FRA flight leave from the AC terminal, and not the D terminal?

Then you wont have a problem as international non-usa flights are considered domestic connections. It would be like if you were connecting to a flight going to Vancouver.

You will get off the plane, find the gate on your ticket of just look for the big grey and yellow plane on the tarmac and go sit near its gate. No security or anything.

As previously indicated, your only issue is if for some reason there was a mechanical or weather delay from Saskatoon. Even if there was though, Air Canada would likely just put you on the later flight as there are normally 2 flights a day to Frankfrurt.

C44 is the normal gate for that flight.

Gate 44 is on the other side of the airport though, if he is coming in on Air Canada and departing with Luftansa. He is going to have to exit A concourse, walk over to D concourse and go through security once again. Still enough time if his flight arrives on time, cutting it close if its delayed.

I didn't think Air Canada ran 2 Frankfurt flights a day, just the one which usually left later at night.

I just noticed it was D44. Very weird they dont depart from the AC terminal.

Is there no way to get to D terminal without not going through security again?

Since it's all AC (or partners) AC won't let you book the tickets if there isn't enough time. You should get all your boarding passes in S'toon so at worst you'll just have to go through security again and if the line is long, just go to the front. It might be worth a check to confirm you can get all your boarding passes at once.

Again, if it's a real concern then take the ~10am flight and you'll have a load of time to wander around the airport. Get a bunch of change and play pinball for an hour. You'll have enough stress with all the flights and just going to Ghana (internship?) will be stressful enough.

As far as I know there isn't a way of bypassing security.

I believe Luftansa goes out of the D terminal because that terminal has more accommodation for bigger planes. British Airways KLM flights also go out of the D terminal.

You'll have more than enough time unless there is a delay from Saskatoon.

I still think there's a way to go from A to D. it's not an obvious way but it is possible. You might even need someone to escort you across (and it might even depend on which gates are being used by C). It's worth a call to the Calgary Airport to be sure.

Otherwise, yeah security will let you jump to the front of the line at Concourse D if you have to exit.

Thanks guys. I think I will call the airport or something and ask. But i might just end up doing what furnaceface suggested and see if I can take an earlier flight annd save myself some uneeded worrying. I'm going to volunteer there for 3 months. So if i can save myself any worrying is good.

The flight is actually operated by Lufthansa, and Air Canada codeshares on the route with them.

Now that we know you are with AC that guarantees your bags connect automatically and even if you need to check through security again at the D wing you have plenty of time if you Saskatoon flight arrives on time.

Edit: Ok I see you haven't exactly answered if your flight from YXE-YYC is on Air Canada or Westjet.
