Now I know that a iPad isn't the most rugged thing out there, but I think most of those netbooks would be destroyed pretty quickly. an iPad just has the glass to wipe off if it gets dirty, otherwise, it's mostly sealed inside. Those netbooks would collect so much dirt and dust inside the keyboard, and inside the case.
Plus, an iPad, with a bigger screen (not that it's huge) is much better for document viewing than a small netbook with a tiny screen.

Metal shavings and dirty hands are a fast way to a scratched glass screen, or ruined netbook.
Here's something a lot more realistic, although probably a lot more expensive.

Bonus points for having a handle so you can use it to take a swing at someone. And knowing Toughbooks, not only would it knock your opponent out, it would survive quite nicely
Forget that...here is the gold standard for ruggedized: http://www.coated.com/panasonic-toug...-field-tablet/

Looks like I'll be picking one up on my trip to the states that happens to coincide with the release.
I won't wait in line though. I'll go a few days later and hope they have some in stock.

Something interesting I noticed - with Apple's move to actual content on the weblinks that point to items in the iTunes store, if you google now for something like "accufuel ipad", or the name of any App pretty much that exists in the iTunes store, you get a results with titles like "AccuFuel for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store" for all the iTunes store links.
Neat!

Looks like you're gonna have to jailbreak both the phone and the iPad to tether them. Stupid. I definitely won't be buying one for myself. It was already a limited gadget, but if either have to (A)pay Rogers TWICE for internet or (B)risk having very expensive iBricks, then there is no way I'm making this purchase.
Edit: Actually, pay Rogers THREE times for Internet (home, iPhone, iPad)

I'm thinking about swapping my iPhone for a Milestone and then picking up the iPad. I don't know though. I mean I really want one... but I don't know that I'm going to use it at all while I still have my iPhone.

In the US, Verizon frowns upon tethering with the Droid, but who knows what Telus or whoever thinks up there. PDAnet is in the Android Market, so there you go. Milestone + WiFi iPad and you've got everything the iPhone can do, although with decrease portability.

Haha, if the iPad isn't portable enough, you could always go with an iPod Touch instead.

Not really, you technically only need a jailbroken iphone. Through jailbreaking you can make your iPhone act like a mifi and send out a wifi signal for your iPad to pick up. I suppose if you want to link the two with a cable then you'd have to have a jailbroken phone and iPad, but I'd rather just go the wireless route.

Sounds like my company might try to get some iPad's from Apple as the VP of the Navigation category wants us to develop something for them.
That or we pre-order.

The non-DRMed ePub books is great news, but I was prepared to be shocked if they didn't let you do that. It would be like selling an iPod that couldn't take mp3's from your own cd's.
I'm jealously reading my twitter stream right now from a bunch of americans that pre ordered theirs this morning.

That is good news that the iPad is supporting non-DRMed ePub books.
So if I am keeping track correctly the iPad will be able to read books from the:
- iBookstore
- Any non-DRM ePub book (Google Books and the like)
- Books from Barnes and Noble through their app (not sure if this will work in Canada)
-Books from the Kindle app (hasn't been announced, but they have one for the iPhone)
-Books from Kobo app from Chapters (same as Kindle, haven't announced an app, but they have one for the iPhone)
This make the selection of books quite large, possibly the largest. It should also be easier to find cheaper ebooks too. So does Sony sell it's books in a DRM ePub format? Meaning that I won't be able to read every Sony ebook bought from their store on the iPad?

Some interesting things from the new site:
The very last line mentions AVI ... My initial thought it video from digital cameras, but is there any chance that could mean support for AVI files outright?
Screen rotation lock ... oh hell yes. Trying to read things while laying on my side in bed is so damn annoying. This is an awesome feature. Surprised they'd give it a whole button though.

Something like 50 thousand units sold in the first 2 hours.
Edit: Whoops. I screwed that up. It's 50 thousand ORDERS in the first two hours. Each order could potentially have more than one unit.

No. This specifically mentioned motion JPEG and so is meant to playback the de-facto video format on digital cameras.
AVI is a horrible format for modern video anyways - it's not designed to accommodate variable bit rate streams, encoding algorithms that rely on future data to build the current frame, etc.
