Apple isn't suddenly evil. They've always been evil.

Apple is just as guilty as everyone else of stealing patents. The whole mobile me track your iPhone thing was directly taken from a Vancouver based company. They presented it to Steve Jobs. Jobs considered it, told them to take a hike, then they stole it.

Patents can be reviewed and taken away.

Edit: Stealing patents? WTF does that even mean?

If a company is ######ed enough to go showing off their ideas without protecting them first, well... let's just say even I know not to do that.

Google has applied for and was denied a trademark for using the word Android but they are using it even though it was granted previously to another software company and they are being sued.

No uproar over the fact that Facebook is trying to patent the 'newsfeed'?

This is how the technology business works. If you don't apply for, protect and enforce your company's innovations, you die.

Like Palm.

Licensing is huge $$$.
Last time I checked we didnt have 50+ forum members who were Kodak fanboys who defend them any every turn and who say another competing company is pure evil.

You guys are the reason this is news - seriously, trying to patent power use in a digital camera. There was a thread on the Kodak lawsuits on this forum as well.

The digital camera was first invented in some part in 1961. Does anyone really believe there is no prior art for power management of a digital camera prior to 1999. The fact that Apple even filed that patent knowing full well there was prior art is so unbelievably arrogant and has absolutely nothing to do with innovation.

Everyone who follows technology knows they have to defend their patents or risk losing them - no one has a problem with that, its normal buisness operation. But just some of the patents they tried to claim as there own are just mindblowing.

"We're only talking about this becuase there are people here who like Apple products and they need to be SQUASHED LIKE BUGS."

Careful, dude. It's us Apple users who are supposed to be arrogant, selfish pricks. Let's not start confusing everyone by having you MS fanboys trying to copy us.

Oh you mean the patent that they DID have when they took it to Jobs? Yeah, Apple's just a much bigger company with bigger more intimidating lawyers to fight that patent suit.

That's a pretty dumb thing to assume there..

Yet they are granted by the patent office. The arrogance of Apple to try and patent something and have it approved? Come on. Are you honestly surprised that patents get approved where prior art exists? All companies do this. Microsoft has just this month patented a news feed with comments for social networks patent and Facebook is trying to do the same. Microsoft also recently was approved for patent for tagging people in an photograph. They have another 'new' patent for straighting an image based on edges in a photo.

For everyone of the 13 arrogant, non innovative Apple patent violation claims that everyone seems to be interested in now, there are hundreds of thousands of ridiculous patents from thousands of companies that are equally arrogant and not innovative. Picking a few select patents to prove a point is ridiculous way of forming an opinion on a company. It's the way things are done. It's just one salvo by Apple in response to Google's previous one at them.

There's a freaking Jolly Rogers that is flown on the Apple Campus flag pole for cripes sake.

Companies steal from each other. This is not new, secret information.

An Explosion of Mobile Patent Lawsuits

At first glance, it looks as if we’re in the middle of a patent lawsuit Super Bowl party. Nearly every large mobile phone player — with the exception of Microsoft, Palm and, so far, Google — has recently been involved in some sort of patent litigation regarding mobile technologies.

On Tuesday when I spoke with Eric Von Hippel, a professor of technological innovation at M.I.T.’s Sloan School of Management, he pointed out that patent lawsuits had turned particularly unpleasant lately as a result of companies that only buy and sell patents.

In the past, Mr. Von Hippel said, if companies entered a litigious dispute “they would usually come to an agreement to simply share each other’s patents.” But he said a new genre of patent lawsuits, brought on by what he calls “patent trolls,” had changed the nature of the disputes. These companies have no interest in using the patents, Mr. Von Hippel said, but instead hope to reap large sums of money from the lawsuits themselves.

Until Apple starts making bad software and worse operating systems the public won't get even close to calling them the new MS. EDIT: I should mention I haven't indulged in what I'm sure has become another flame war, I'm simply referring to the thread title, which from what I gather in the first post, is a shot across the bow.

Not really related to patents, but a friend sent this to me and I had a chuckle:

If it is not related then why bother then to stir the pot? Shouldn't you go back to posting depressing yet realistic scores somewhere else?

Meh.. I chuckle to at side by side comparisons of completely unrelated products and spec lists that are incorrect.

Next up, a side by side comparison of my dishwasher vs. my clothes washer!

Honest question: What's so bad about Windows?
Stability? Can't think of the last time I've had any problems that weren't hardware related.
Virus/malware? Can't think of the a legitimate threat that would effect someone that wasn't doing something they shouldn't have been. You're seeing these types of problems on OSX these days too.
Speed? No complaints at all.
Compatibility? Can't think of a single piece of software that I need that will run on OSX but not Windows. I can think of a couple though for the opposite comparison.
Usability? It might just be because it's what I'm used to but I find the Windows setup much more intuitive and quick to use.

I'm looking for a reason to justify playing with a mac but can't. They have some sleek looking products but I can't think of what else it has going for it to make me want to make the switch. The closest I've come to giving apple some serious consideration is a single iPhone app I wouldn't mind running.

Surprised no one has talked about iTunes (as related to iPhones and pods)
Hmmm why can't I have two computers I sync with and drag and drop content into them?

Stability? Can't think of the last time I've had any problems that weren't hardware related. This will be a "different strokes for different folks" kind of thing. I had major stability problems when I was on Windows, but then again I don't know enough to properly troubleshoot half the time.

Virus/malware? Can't think of the a legitimate threat that would effect someone that wasn't doing something they shouldn't have been. I often do things I shouldn't be doing.

You're seeing these types of problems on OSX these days too. You don't see similar numbers though. Yes OSX does (and will continue to) have malware problems, but not in the same league.

Speed? No complaints at all. Probably a combo of doing things I shouldn't have done and not being cunning enough to fix the problem, but my pc's always deteriorated over time and required a lot of attention.

Compatibility? Can't think of a single piece of software that I need that will run on OSX but not Windows. I can think of a couple for the opposite comparison. I would have a great deal of problems going from Mac to PC. I never did a task on my pc that I can't do on a mac (we obviously do different things). Of course if I ever needed a pc program I'd just put windows on my mac.

Usability? It might just be because it's what I'm used to but I find the Windows setup much more intuitive and quick to use. Again, it's totally what you're used to. After using both I find I prefer the usage of the Mac, but I'd be lying if I told you that the transition wasn't a challenge.

I'm looking for a reason to justify playing with a mac but can't. They have some sleek looking products but I can't think of what else it has going for it to make me want to make the switch. You really don't sound like somebody who would like a mac. I know it's supposed to be the Mac fans job to tell everybody they should get a mac, but I've always been adamant that there are many people that would HATE using a mac. I think you may be one of those people.

Ugh tell me about it. I'm hoping that all the talk about Apple moving to a "cloud" itunes system is true so we can manage our libraries from anywhere.

Judging by the graphic above on the abundance of lawsuits between other companies, it looks like this is just some sour grapes. As photon said, why wouldn't defend your patent?

You know I was a hardcore PC/Windows guy for a very long time...built my own etc, etc. I bought a MacBook Pro last year and I couldn't be happier. It's awesome. It's fast. It doesn't lag. It doesn't break. I don't have to wait. It's not bloated with crap.

I couldn't fathom going back, and when I've had to be family tech support for parents, it's been an exercise in pure frustration.

I learned how to troubleshoot from Microsoft.
