I thought this was a really interesting article. Canada ranks pretty well.

Darn, I read this as a Cracked.com article with the "most preposterous nations on earth"

The linked article: "why canada cooks its books too" from that page was more interesting I found.

I didn't realize that while the national debt is only $56 Billion (miraculuously about 10% of what it used to be in 1998!!!), Ontario's provincial debt is almost $15 billion and most of the provinces aside from Alberta are doing badly in that department and that is hiding a major weakness in the Canadian economy when you only look at the national debt.

No, you are reading that all wrong.

http://www.debtclock.ca/

The $56B is the 2009 deficit. What we added to the debt in 2009. Which was 10%(!!!) of our total debt.

The Liberals did a good job of getting it from $563B to $458B, but much of that was just offloading the debt to the provinces, which is why so many of the provinces are struggling with their books right now.

That's what I get for trying to read & think at 3 in the morning. Good article anyway if you don't fall asleep on the Greece part on page 1 like I did.

And still not #1 in anything. How typical

Btw, I'm highly suspicious of those "economical foundations". We have tons of debt, we're picking up more really fast, and a lot of the debt has been passed on from state to counties.

Nice to be up there anyway.

The education @ 16th ranked in the world is about right though. Those Nordic countries have government paid university education!

Love the health position (22). Wonder how much influence is placed on our "vaunted" health care system?

I'd imagine it's not only access to health care it's also the health of the populace, which isn't very good with our obesity.

I'd love to live in any of the top 5 countries, especially Switzerland. Australia, not so much. From everything I've heard, it's like America Lite, which isn't my style. I'd love to move back to Canada as well.
