^ In fairness to Dick though, back in the day that didn't mean what it does today. I think that it wasn't until Nixon came along when it was used in that sense?

Haha, I clicked that link and three of my more politically active friends are already members. I know nothing about him, but based on those endorsements he'd probably fit fairly will with what I believe. I will have to look into this.

Is that really the formula? 50% of taxes collected? Because if so that's really horrible. If you want to pay for improvements for your city, you shouldn't have to pay the province to do it. If the city increase taxes for its residents, they exclusively should get to spend that money.

Not all Engineers are uncultured! It's the wealthy who fund most arts and sponsor festivals, so with a screename like Cowboy89 it's a bit odd that you're blaming engineers accountants and "finance people" for a lack of culture.

Rather presumtuous to assume that having a screename that reads "Cowboy89" would automatically = unwashed hick. I am a professional in one of those very fields I slagged.

What Bronco is referring to is that around 1/2 of the property taxes paid go to either the public or catholic school boards. At one time the tax rates were determined by the school boards, but now they are set by the province, who then distributes the money to the boards.

Thanks, looks like the provincial tax rate and the municipal tax rate are independent. Which is the way it should be.

Very good column by Naheed Nenshi in todays Calgary Herald about the Airport Tunnel.
Quite combative toward city council for the most part of their short sightedness. Mentions how Bronco didnt look at the tunnel as a priority until "Stevenson" organized for it. Also mentions he is taking a leave from writing for a while.
Maybe he is thinking about running for mayor. After reading his report on Canadian cities, he doesnt sound like he would be that bad.

When I read the part about him taking leave I kind of assumed that was the reason why. I hope so and think that he would be an excellent candidate.

After reading that, um, article, he's so far left-wing I don't think he's able to even turn his head to the right.

Its a mayoral candidate, I am not looking to him to appoint judges, just make sure my inner city tax dollars dont go to pay for new burb fire stations.

Seeing as how money is fungible, how do you propose this be done?

Easy, tax on new homes that dont meet a density requirement, you tax every home in a new sub division what it would cost to build a new fire/police/ambulance for that suburb as those are capital costs.
When a new home costs $350K - a $7500ish tax is no longer too much to ask to pay for required capital infrastructure costs IMO. We just need a mayor who isnt bending over taking it from the building companies to get it done.

So if this is true, Bronco is asking the province for 20-some million to build that chinese-finger-trap eyesore of a bridge?
