So back on topic (SSDs), can you put games/software on seperate drive as your OS, or does this cause problems? Because with games like ME2 that are enormous, it seems like you could run out of room awful fast with an SSD.
And please don't tell me that I should be gaming on a console instead.
Edit: I'm kinda hankerin for an upgrade. Now that I have my new NIC on the way, I'm thinking about either the SSD linked above... or... http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231295. I realize the SSD would probably give me more bang than the RAM, but I'm running 4GB 1066 atm and 8GB of 1333 sounds pretty tasty, especially for only $365.00.
What do you guys think? 160GB SSD for $476 or 8GB 1333 RAM for $365? Keep in mind that I do run virtual machines.

That's the other reason I can't make up my mind on SSDs at the moment. Ideally I'd like both the OS and games on the same SSD and movies/music/media on a storage drive.
Therefore the SSD needs to be one of the larger and very expensive capacities. Probably the 160GB model Fanin80 has linked. The X25-m is reputed to be one of the best choices.
You can put games and software on a separate drive, it is no issue whatsoever. I even have my Documents folder (which includes many essential profile files for the running of windows in the first place) on a separate drive.

You want SO-DIMMs? Is this for a laptop? From a friend's experience, slapping an SSD in an aging laptop revitalized it and changed his entire experience. I recently made the choice to go with the extra 4GB (for a total of 8GB) of 1066 ram instead of the SSD because I still feel there is room for improvements and reductions in price for the technology whereas the ram is relatively stable.
I wonder what the benefits will be of an SSD system drive, with all my profile folders (Documents, Movies, Music, Photos, etc etc) on a second, 500GB 7200RPM drive. I get that the OS and all my apps will run faster, but won't accessing my data files on the second drive create a bottleneck of sorts?

I currently run that system, though with a 300GB Raptor, of which I'm only using 150GB and that's with all my development stuff, some virtual machines, and a bunch of games (heck my steam folder is 50GB) which I really don't all need installed.. so I figure I could probably get by with a 120GB SSD or a 200GB one would be fine. Still too much money for 200+GB ones so I'll probably wait, but the 128GB ones are becoming more and more attractive, and I could probably install some less used software on the other drive.
As far as it being a bottlneck on the 2nd drive, in theory yes, but in practice how much time for most apps is spent actually loading the app, and how much time loading the document. It takes about 1.5 seconds to load Word on my PC, but the doc loads instantly. Photoshop takes 7 seconds to load, an image less than 1 (a small image though).
Plus unless it's movies or working with print images, most documents are quite small anyway.

You can image the drive over no problems. It should run normally if you duplicate the drive exactly with one of the various tools out there (Norton Ghost, Drive Image XML, Paragon Drive Backup - which I use). A fresh install would always be a bit faster and cleaner if you haven't been maintaining your OS very well, but if you know what you are doing and have been keeping Windows rot away, you should be fine.
I think MexEx IPRs are worth it on certain parts (like the motherboard or videocard where it costs $10 for 2 years and you don't want to hassle with RMA). These are parts you also cannot be without for the month it might take to get an RMA approved, send the part to the states for warranty, wait for them to do tests, decide what to do, send you a replacement, etc.
With an SSD, most of them have long warranties already and it's a small enough and easy enough part to live without while you are RMAing them if they do break down. You can just use a spare harddrive or your backup (which you should always have) to keep your computer running. Patriot for instance, has something like a 10 year warranty on their SSDs

Nah that's cool. I'm learning about SSD too. I might consider one once I get the hang of things.
I kept it pretty much the same. I was looking at Intel, but I was having difficulty comparing the chips. i5 made things too expensive, but i3 looked too low end.
I did lower the OS to Premium and I bought a case from Memory Express, Antec Sonata Elite $109.99 and a Logitech Z523 2.1 speaker system. I have one monitor, Samsung P2250 and I'm going to get a second one shortly.
Thanks for the help though everyone. I've been out of the loop with desktops for three years, so I'm out of touch, especially with the motherboards and anything related to PCI.
Now I just need to wait for half my order from the US. It's already been delayed into next week
