The people selling them for hundreds are just speculating. Everybody's coming off the sugar high now that the olympics are over and wants to get merchandise. In about a month the sales are going to plummet because people
A) won't pay that much for a hoodie
B) have moved on
HBC isn't going to spend millions to earn thousands. They print another run, it gets to stores in say 4 weeks. That's a month of people cooling down from olympic excitement. Say they've got another 6 weeks to sell COC gear. Summer hits. People forget about the winter olymics and start buying camping gear, bikes, canoes... So now the Bay is sitting on millions of dollars of merchandise that they have to blow out at 50% below cost. What they might sell right now won't be close to what they sell down the road for a discount. It's like the Costco model. You want stuff for Christmas, buy it in October, because it's gone by November, and they're not getting more just to sit on it. Strike quick, and walk away with the profits.
