I think it was NHL 97 or 98 for the SNES, you could score by running the goalie. As soon as you ran into the goalie, the ref would initiate a delayed penalty call, and the goalie would start leaving the net, and pay no attention to the puck that was rolling into the net. Good times, good times.

Don't remember that...but I recall that 1999 and 2000 had glitches where you could start a wraparound, pass (as the goalie would always try to pokecheck you), and score.
Ah, how I abused that as a kid...

Doublepost...my bad.
Anyways, after restarting my season (To make up all the new Flames), I've realized how trade-crazy the AI is.
Any way to remedy this? Or am I forever stuck seeing Marian Hossa go to a new team each year?

Marian Hossa going to a different team every year actually seems pretty realistic.

AFAIK, the only way you can control the AI trades is to not have AI trades... aka, do the "season" mode or whatever it's called and control each team yourself. It's the same mode you can use to copy all the trades that are done in the NHL each season. Though of course you can't control injuries, etc.

Haha, I remember in one franchise mode Kovalchuk, Crosby and Ovechkin were on the Florida Panthers. Then the next year they traded away Crosby and Oveckin while keeping Kovalchuk.
I'd rather have this crazy AI than the old plain stupid AI. At least, this way sometimes a random team becomes incredibly good and gives you a challenge.

Once you're about 3 or 4 seasons in to a franchise/dynasty mode... it's a crapshoot for who's on what team because it's also a crapshoot of who's retired, what new rookies are good, who's improved, who's got worse, etc. So I don't have an issue with it really. Who's to say some of those trades couldn't happen anyway years from now.
Hell this is my lineup about 30games into my 3rd season:
Nash - Stamkos - Iginla
Brassard - Backlund - Watt (he's awesome somehow)
Simmonds - Gilles - RandomNameRookie
Nystrom - Sutter - Chucko
Regehr - Alzner
Bouwmeester - Pelech
Giordano - RandomNameRookie
Kipper
Irving
The only "rule" I go with trade-wise is if Sutter's traded someone away, then I do too.

Wow you really kept the Flames prospects well. I trade those bums off when a team is looking for young player, you can usually get a top player or B+ prospect thats way way better

I trade for the hell of it. I'm in year 5, have had Kipper, MA Fleury, Miller and Irving all be starters at one point. Current Flames lineup:
Ovechkin - Crosby - Iginla
Kozlov (draft) - Kozybaev (draft) - Cammy
Bourque - Lombardi - Sutter
Kaleta - Kearns (Draft) - Prust
D is all drafted guys except Bouwmeester
Goalie is some Russian draftee at 89 with B potential all around.
I'm all about signing the FA's with high potential to long term contracts. With the fully upgraded staff guys with B or better potential usually progress about 2 points during the season, and another 4 or 5 between seasons. I'm like D Sutter with draft picks, ship em out!

That's gutsy. I'm not willing to be that frivolous with my video game trades.

Would the roster update after the trade deadline be the last one of the year? Or would they have one right before the playoffs started? I can't remember from last year whether it was after the deadline that the last update came out, or after the season finished.

Ugh. This is such a frustrating game to play. Not because it's really challenging, but because the controls and AI are so freaking clunky. I can't count the number of times I've pressed a button on my controller and gotten no response from the player on the screen.
The passing is absolutely horrible. I want to lose it everytime I aim a pass for a guy in the slot and instead it goes back to the point. Turning the pass assistance off helps a little bit but then it takes forever to send a hard pass up the ice. Huge step back from NHL 09, IMO.

I noticed the game has these pre determined paths where they assume you always want to pass to. The puck always wants to go the the slot or some set position where someone isnt instead of to a wide open clear player that is looking right at you with his stuck down. It always expects and forces cross crease passes even though one of the biggest points of this entire game is that those passes no longer work, or ever go through to the player.

I think they wanted to cut down on the goals, so they just made everything harder when they shouldn't of had to. For example, the passing is unbelievably horrible but it is "more realistic", how ever by being more "realistic" it usually means your pass never goes to the player you want it to or he passes it the wrong way.
Another complaint is I want to score goals by just shooting. A good hard shot should go in, how ever they never do (unless you glitch it by going top circle). Everything has to be 2-1's, or tips, or dekes.

Those last two posts...entirely different than from my experience
I don't have too much trouble passing at all, you just have to know how to pass, think of where guys are going etc. I would say 25% of the time my wingers stretch out before crossing the blue line to gather the pass, other than that it's usually tape to tape. The one thing that bothers me sometimes is the pass back to the point on a 5 on 5 situation, the lack of pinching in by the D etc.
Cross crease or cross slot, always works for me, because I only do it when it's there, can't force it anymore which I like

To beat goalies with a shot, you just have to get them to move laterally a bit before your shot.
