Resume - what should it look like?

There seem to be a million different templates out there for what a resume should look like.

I learned how to write a resume when I was in grade 11 in CALM and while my resume has obviously changed since then (six years later) I've basically kept the format the same.

I'm about to apply for summer jobs and was thinking it might be good to check and see if there's a better, more up-to-date template out there that is generally accepted for resumes.

Does the format of a resume change depending on the type of job you are applying for?

If someone could show me the accepted format for resumes or wanted to review mine, I could PM it to them and would much appreciate it.

Or does it really not matter?

Make sure to include a hobbies section, and include any impersonations you can do in that area.

It's also good to do white text on black paper instead of the usual way. Makes your resume stand out! Plus Comic Sans is the best font EVER for something like a resume.

Depends on the field. For my field, max 1 page, and they like to keep it industry specific (no BS like i like hockey) and I don't bother listing soft skills like communication, hard work et al. If you can, have a more detailed and comprehensive resume on professional website if its a serious field you're in. I have one up, with a list of papers for all my projects and a few employers have gone through them.

That's basically the format I have mine in as well. It's good if you've had a variety of jobs in the past where you've developed a lot of skills/experience that are related to the job you're looking for but they weren't necessarily the exact type of job you're applying for now. You focus on the skills you have, with only a brief run-down of the specific jobs you've had.

You say you're applying for summer jobs, so I assume that means you're a student. If so, there should be services provided by your learning institution that will provide you with resume writing advice/assistance.

Also, if you're looking for work related to what you're studying, I'd talk to your instructors to get their advice. Hopefully, they still have their fingers on the pulse of their industry and can point you in the right direction.

Are there any resume writers on CP? We seem to have everything else. I have been looking at redoing mine and would rather just pay someone to do it.

I can do it for you but it is quite expensive and I'm not very good.

It seems to change all the time. What was "good" or the common standard a few years ago probably changed... so I can see why you might be unsure. One thing is for sure, you can't always trust career councilors. My wife was layed off and as part of her EI requirement, she had to go to some resume tutorials and they had no idea what people in science are looking for in a resume. They treated it as if she was applying at 7-11 or something.

Just keep in mind, if you have been out of school and in the workforce for a while, use a functional resume. Don't list all your previous jobs and schools, but focus on what you have done and the skills that you have. If anything, putting exact dates to your experience and schooling could draw attention to you not having done something in a while.
