Completely false. You get the best results by doing the same things, with the exception of incrementally increasing the weight, until you have completely exhausted your gains which can take years.
Switching your routine is what pussies do when things get hard.

What is it about fitness discussions that always lead to arguments?

The whole concept of switching it up is usually put in place for beginners as a psychological tool to help them keep going. Changing up your exercises, order, frequency, and everything else increases efficacy.
That being said, it's periodization which will help augment muscle gains. It's not necessarily switching up exercises (although obviously different exercises work muscles different ways, and you should have a lot of variation) but training with linear or non-linear periodization, which involves changing the intensity of the workout (ie 10 reps to 7 reps to 4 reps) to work all fiber types and allow adequate recovery. It's been shown to significantly help in resistance training.

GTF trolling again, and trolling hard.
It's probably best to ignore him; you could dominate him in an argument and he'll persist.

P90X has linear periodization built in I believe.
Linear periodization involves long-term "cycles" where you work to peak at a certain point. Olympic athletes rely on it heavily to peak for events. It usually involves several phases like an adaptive phase (light intensity, high volume), a hypertrophy phase, a strength phase, and a power phase (high intensity, low volume). Each phase is a mesocycle which lasts perhaps around a couple of weeks depending on your program.
Non-linear periodization (or undulating periodization) is much simpler in that each workout uses different intensities. For example, if you work out full body MWF each week, you may have your monday workout as 10 reps in each set, wednesday 8 reps, friday 6 reps. This method is a lot less about peaking and more about long-term muscle gain because of how it works one type of fiber while allowing another adequate rest.

I'm not saying switch up every 3 weeks.
Give it 10 weeks.
But at some point you have to change what you're doing.

And how is that going to make you better at what you are doing?
If you're teaching a kid how to read, you don't stop after 10 weeks, start teaching them math instead and then expect them to get better at reading.

Are you suggesting it takes weeks, even years, to master a set of exercises?
Are you less coordinated than an angst-ridden, acne-plagued 13 year old?

Prove it. Every book I have read and every seminar I have attended all say the same thing. To get better results you need to challenge your body in different ways (exercises) to get the best results.

What does that have to do with anything?
Is how much you can squat the measuing stick of physical fitness now?
The question was, does it take weeks or years to master a certain exercise? Unless you are mentally challenged I would say no.

Hmm, well, back when I was 19 I squatted over 300lbs. I only started doing squats again back in December and now can squat 155lbs, but that's with about 80 reps.

GTF at it again!
Suffice to say, much more than you can.
Especially if it takes you years to learn how to bench press with good form.

Take a look at the second video in this link:
http://startingstrength.com/index.ph..._shane_hamman/
Here's a genetic freak who took five months just to learn the Olympic lifts. Not master, but learn. Do you think he is mentally challenged or should he have been able to learn them in a few weeks?

We're not talking about form. We're talking about mastering it i.e. being able to do it at your maximum possible weight.
But if you want to avoid the question I'll just assume that you don't even bother squatting since you can't find a pretty pink barbell to match the rest of your training equipment.

How much do you squat? Oh right....nobody cares.
I was once told by a bodybuilder that you haven't maxed out squatting until you've crapped your pants doing it. Have you?
This is about P90X anyway. Start another thread about squats if you want to keep yapping about it.

No, we're talking about how to gain the most muscle mass.
Olympic lifters need to lift as much weight as possible on only a couple of compound lifts. Obviously they need to practice the actual lifts as much as possible because of the training principle of specificity. That is not what we're talking about here.
And while they do the same lifts, they use periodization to peak for events. So you're wrong in all facets of this discussion.

Where was the topic of gaining the most muscle mass brought up?
And while Olympic lifters use periodization, they're also experts at training. Pretty much everyone here is a novice and using a program designed for an expert is a foolish idea.
Your question was not germane to the discussion. If I am 150 or 350 is irrelevant to any discussion. Besides, you are nothing but an ignoramus masquerading as an expert.

Where was the topic of specializing for specific lifts in world-class events brought up?

It doesn't matter who you are, your muscles adapt the same way. Periodization is not an expert technique.

Oh the irony.
Yea, scold me about tangents. You're the one who brought up how much I weigh in that thread.
I've used research and science to back up my contested claims in the past. I don't claim to be an expert, I post what the experts have confirmed scientifically. Oh, right, you conviently ignored all that.
