Tennis, golf, skiing, luge, bobsled, speed-skating, track & field, basketball etc. etc.
Just because men are better than women at sports (in most cases due to strength and speed, as Vlad pointed out earlier) doesn't mean that women shouldn't compete in sports. Or that women's sports shouldn't be part of the Olympics.
And it doesn't really mean their accomplishments are less worthwhile when they do achieve success in their respective sports.
|
I don't agree that they could beat women in most sports at that age. Of course, there's no way to quantify it, so we'll just have to disagree about it.
It bothers me when I see kids that age beat Olympic athletes. Maybe it's just me. I have no problem with women sports in the Olympics in general, and realize grown men at the pinnacle of their sports would likely beat women at the pinnacle of the same sport, but when 15, 16, and 17 year olds are able to handle these supposed Olympic athletes quite easily, to the point of them needing to put them into headlocks, it makes me question the health of that women's sport.
Vlad's already gone over a lot of it. It's not just the speed or strength, it's the overall skill of the women's ice hockey team. That is something women can do and succeed at without needing to be 230 pounds, but the level of it is a lot lower than it could be.

I do not understand this need to legitimize a sport by pitting female athletes against males, regardless of age.
Really, what kind of qualification is that? Arbitrary and asinine.
Finland is proud of their woman's team won Bronze. Why can't we be happy to win Gold?

I'm happy we won gold, but that doesn't mean we can't still question the legitimacy of the sports as an Olympic event or the health of the sport as a whole.

I don't disagree with you that nearly all woman's sports are as deserving of being an Olympic sport. Don't let my tongue in cheek posts let you think otherwise. While woman are physiologically weaker than men, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to have their own competitions - I completely support woman in the Olympics (so no one plays that misogyny card).
However I completely agree with Vlad's posts in that:
1) Woman's hockey is completely unwatchable in its current form. The woman do not have the skill to play it at an international level, it's cringe-inducing to watch. More importantly, there is no competition. The lack of skill I mentioned could be overshadowed if there was a highly competitive field, but right now it's a mockery of Olympic competition.
2) You have been completely irrational in your arguments.

I'm pretty sure he could take any team single handed, YES he is the greatest basketball player EVER and he is from CANADA!!
He would play for the dream team anyway as Canada couldn't qualify a men's team in the olympics.

Slower and weaker does not equal just as good. Read your own post.
Women and men were not created equal. There is a reason there is a womens and mens division in almost EVERY sport.

The WNBA is just as bad to watch, although in reality, womens basketball can be enjoyable as its a level playing field amongst countries. There is no way that any womans team in the world could beat the Canadian Mens team(most men on the team played in DIV 1 NCAA and some NBA, which is ten times the quality of any womans pro league or player).

Anyone else find it funny that, in general, the same people who will fight to the bitter end that the Flames never do any wrong and should not face any criticism are the same people refusing to acknowledge anything wrong with what went on on the ice last night?
Interesting thought. I guess you could also same the other ways.

The IOC even thinks this has turned from molehill to mountain and won't be investigating. This has now officially turned into a non issue. I think we can all move on now to more important things.
Quote:
IOC spokesman Mark Adams said a letter is being drafted to Canadian Olympic officials to get more details on the impromptu party the Canadian women threw at Canada Hockey Place after winning gold at the Winter Games on Thursday.
"To be honest I think people are in search of a story that doesn't exist," Adams told a briefing Friday when asked about the incident. "There were pictures all over the front pages and so on this morning and I think people are looking for someone to say it's terrible"

Did you not post this:
I could round up a womens basketball team that could throttle the best men Canada could field. Should there be no men's basketball in Canada either?
Arguing with you is a cross between shooting fish in a barrel and banging your head against the wall...

You don't make any sense.
The best women the world have to offer vs the Canadian Men's Basketball team would not have a significantly different result than the best women the world has to offer vs the Canadian Men's Hockey team.
Neither would be remotely close.

Lower your expectations of women's hockey, or don't watch? Why do you accept that women don't compete on a level playing field with men in other events, yet expect women's hockey to look like mens.

What a load of BS.
Jiri's one of the most pro Flames supporters (not a dig) and he was one of the first on board to say this was very poor.
Just utter drivel.
