Default Olympic Jersey Colors

I'm having a debate with a co-worker right now. He's wondering why he always sees Canada in a white jersey when they should be home. I told him NHL is backwards, and all the other leagues (including all IIHF competitions) have white for home, and red for road. This applies to the Olympics too right? How are home/away teams determined for the Olympics?

I believe red is home, and white is away, and in the elimination games is decided through seed on who is home.(better record=home)

Just because Canada is playing "at home" in Vancouver doesn't mean they are the home team. As mentioned above the away team is in white and home team in dark. Slovakia was seeded below Canada and will therefore be the away team. Canada will wear their red jerseys and get the last change which will be beneficially when matching against Chara.

The IIHF site shows home jerseys being light for all countries. Does this change for the Olympic tournament?

I find it a bit more upsetting that most of the jerseys are interchangeable.

The NHL used to home home/white and away/color. They changed a few years back, not sure when.

Canada was the "road" team against Russia, and was wearing the white jerseys.

2003-04...Actually, I think it was about halfway through the 2002-03 season, and they decided to make it permanent the next season.

This is one of the reasons the Flames went back to wearing a red jersey as their dark uniform. Good thing too because the run wouldn't have been the same without the rebirth of the Sea of Red.

It appears that they are following the NHL standards for the Olympic Men's tournament.

The Women's tournament used the IIHF standard. Canada was the home team yesterday and wore white.

I believe the IIHF has a rule as well that if the same two teams meet twice in a tournament they have to switch jerseys for the last game.

So, if Canada were to advance to the gold medal game against the U.S., Canada would wear white since they wore red in their first meeting.

Unless NHL rules are being used and not IIHF rules in this tournament.

So it seems IIHF rules are being followed for some rules, and not for others.

I think the higher seed gets to choose what colour they want to wear.
For example Sweden likes to wear yellow and did so in their QF against Slovakia.
