I find it tacky, but not a huge deal. They should have kept it in the locker room, but oh well, they didn't.
I'm glad to see them enjoying the moment they have worked so hard for, good job girls!

Underage drinking of alcohol??? Smoking cigars???
For God's sake, this is an outrage!!! A complete outrage!!!
Didn't these girls know where they were???
Let me remind you that these young women were at centre ice in Canada Hockey Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. British Columbia, people!!!
What they were doing was completely inappropriate in that venue.
Clearly, they should have been smoking the local bud . . .

No, it isn't worth much because you go in guaranteed at least a silver. The whole charade of "competition" is unseemly.

WOW! Worried about them being role models? CHILD PLEASE! With all the violence, sex, and crap on TV and the internet that your kids have easy access too, how any of you people can be upset about them celebrating is beyond me.
Every NHL/MLB/NBA/NFL championship team is on NATIONAL TV in their dressing rooms drinking bubbly and beers.
Granted women's hockey is a joke, but these girls put in so much time to get that Gold Medal. Don't matter where they celebrate, let em do it.
And anyone who has a beef with John Montgomery drinking beer on his walk to the CTV stage, you better check yourself! For the record, he basically had a police escort to get him through the crowd, and you didn't see any Cops telling him to put down the beer or start writing him a ticket. The holier-than-thou attitude that you people are bringing on this site is embarassing.

Guaranteed to lose or win. Wouldn't one of those be a reason to compete? Especially to a team you have lost the big game to in the last two international tournaments?
I am not appreciating a lot of people underscoring what a true victory this was. Even with 2 true competitors there is a 50% chance of failure.

Table Tennis is another example. At the last Olympics, the only medals that weren't won by China were the silver and bronze in the team events because China only had one team.

Come on, give me a break. There is fierce competition in luge or table tennis, even if one country is the best. Every participant is very good, just some are consistently a shade better. Just like basketball (I hate the sport btw and hardly ever watch it) - Americans almost always win, but there is a whole bunch of countries that are very good (as seen by the multinational nature of NBA rosters). In women's hockey, there are 2 (TWO!) competitors - everyone else is pathetic and getting worse relative to US/Canada, judging by the Finns and Swedes at these Olympics.

Same with the Ice Dance competition for 12 consecutive Olympics...if you werent from the USSR/Russia or Germany, you didnt get a sniff of winning anything.
It happens...its also NO reason to discontinue the sport, although I too would like to see it more competitive. Fact is, it isnt and dropping it completely will only make that worse.

I think that in each and every case cited in the post above that it is relevant for the IOC to decide if these sports continue to be a part of the Olympics. Canadian men's dominance in hockey is irrelevant because that dominance no longer exists. At the time, it would have been relevant, but no longer.
The Olympics is about competition. If there is little competition (only two viable teams) then the question needs to be asked. When you say "discontinue the sport", I assume you mean at the Olympics only. Obviously the sport can continue even if it is not part of the Olympic Games.
All of this is off-topic anyway. The thread is about the celebration. It's not the Canadian women's fault that they have no true equals other than the USA women. They worked long and hard and are gold medal winners. They deserve to celebrate and only did so once the fans had left. It was not a public display. It is unfortunate that they forgot about the media. It is even more unfortunate that some people react to this in the way that they do.

the way they celebrated doesn't matter to me. it's the fact that they celebrated at all.
they would celebrate this way after beating Bulgaria too because they want it to be more of an accomplishment than it is.

I sure hope the Canadian Mens team doesn't win Gold. There would be minors (and adults alike) smoking cigars and joints and drinking all over the country that night....... in public!!!! What an embarrassing international incident! Oh, the humanity!! Oh, the debauchery!
Strap your bubble wrap on, make the tinfoil hat and lock yourselves in your house. I'm more afraid and embarrassed of the q-tip puritans in this thread than the 17-18 yr olds that drink and smoke in public.
