Table Tennis is another example. At the last Olympics, the only medals that weren't won by China were the silver and bronze in the team events because China only had one team.

And the Women's luge and bobsleigh also start from a different point on the track... further down from where the men start so technically they're probably not as "skilled" as the men in luge & bobsleigh either.
But those sports are apparently "watchable" so it's okay.

Which is why i brought up the Canadian mens dominance when the Olympic winter games first started, (though i was assured it was irrelevant because...well...just because) and how had they gone with the same criteria back then that some want applied now, mens hockey would never of been allowed to continue as an Olympic sport. Same with the Ice Dance competition for 12 consecutive Olympics...if you werent from the USSR/Russia or Germany, you didnt get a sniff of winning anything.
It happens...its also NO reason to discontinue the sport, although I too would like to see it more competitive. Fact is, it isnt and dropping it completely will only make that worse.

I think this debate boils down to one question. In your mind if you can see the Americans doing this and think "good for them", then you are free to have no problem with the celebration. If you're like me and the thought of Americans doing that makes your blood boil just a little, then I think it would be hypocritical to say our celebration was a positive thing.
|
I'd have no problem with the USA women doing the same in similar circumstances. The rink was empty. Too bad a few media stuck around and decided to create a stink.

The only thing worth discussing IMO, is the underage drinking. Celebrating at centre ice? Who cares?

I don't think the underage drinking is a big deal. I suspect she's from Quebec where she's legal. I have a bigger issue with smoking in a non-smoking facility.

I don't think underage drinking will be an issue. For instance, why do they restrict minors entering licensed liquor establishments but allow drinking at the arena where minors are present. There must be some sort of notwithstanding clause there.

Really, that's a pressing important issue to you that one of the women was 4 months away from turning 19? Had the games been held in Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, or Quebec City there would not have been any 'underage' drinking. It's also not like a bar or other establishment let her do it, but rather a team avoiding excluding their teammate from participating in their celebration.

That's now how law works. Otherwise 18 year old Canadians would be allowed to drink in the States.

If it's illegal, they shouldn't overlook it because of circumstances. No one is above the law, except Steven Seagal.

But if she lived in BC she'd be allowed to drink at home under her parents supervision.

I'd gladly pay the underage drinking citation.
I'm sure more than a couple of others would too.

Ya! Get her!
To the letter of the law! No Provisions, no excuses, mandatory sentencing!
GRR I AM SO MAD THAT A GIRL WHO WOULD BE LEGAL AGE JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY, AND EVERYWHERE IN A MONTHS TIME, HAD A COUPLE OF SIPS OF BEER!
IT JUST AFFECTS ME SO PERSONALLY THAT I CANNOT LET IT GO!
Oh my goodness! Someone is smoking within 20 feet of a doorway! TASER 'EM!
