3) If the OP just met these girls, letting his friend go while he tries to go play beer pong with 3 girls likely wouldn't work very well. The other 2 would get bored, they'd think he's a little strange for not having any friends to come out, and he won't be able to isolate the girl he wants enough to make anything happen.
Okay, I've broken your post up into three points so I can address them individually.
1) While it is normally the case that this is true, there doesn't seem to have been a lot of blocking going on. Maybe some would have developed later on, but at that point, it was clear sailing.
2) I totally agree on this one, and the wingman was being a wet blanket. But that doesn't mean it was his fault the OP didn't score. Winners don't make excuses, so if you're wingman goes down, you've just got to engage on your own.
3) I couldn't disagree with this post more if I tried. First, I think it's a little more strange that a dude would bail on three chicks because his buddy was tired. Second, your assertation that the other two girls would get bored directly contradicts of the Rule of Three (that I just made up for this post, but I think most guys already know, and I think should be added to the Bro Code)
The Rule of Three: When picking up chicks without a wingman, a Bro must only attack groups of three or more. The purpose of the wingman, is to distract a girl's less desirable friends. Consequently, without a wingman to distract her, a Bro attempting to pick up a chick from a group of two, will inevitably get shot down by the desired chicks friend, who doesn't want to get left alone. However, a skilled Bro, may be able to score a hot chick, by using the age old tactic of divide and conquer. By attacking a group of three or more, the Bro may be able to choose a target such that the remainder of the group, latch onto each other, and hence act as defacto wingmen for the bro.
Note: As women are inherently jealous of their hot friends, and will often block the bro out of spite, while attempting to divide and conqure, it is advised that a Bro temporarily suspend Article 31 of the Bro Code.
Article 31: When on the prowl, a Bro hits on the hottect chick first because you just never know.

Further amendment - a really skilled bro can score them both.
Disagree, the wing definitely doesn't pull the trigger but he helps take away the distraction and C-blocks so you can pull it.

He'd already made entry into the group, there had been additional rounds of drinks ordered, invitations to party later had been made. And your math is wrong, beer pong is a 4 person game, the OP was in the perfect position to team up with the girl he wants to take on the other girls, if anything a 5th person creates an awkward odd man out situation. The game was gift wrapping him the isolation.
This is a classic case of expecting your wingman to do more than his job, it happens to all of us, but you can't put the blame on the wingman here. The opportunity for success was there regardless of the wingman, he was never a factor.
I'm definitely not an expert on picking up women, but one thing I've learned is that when there's some sort of big event going on (Stampede, Olympics etc.) an attitude of 'screw it I'm going to roll the dice and see how this winds up' will serve you well. Odds are that the girls are thinking the same thing.

I was thinking about this, and it occured to me that there is a complete lack of understanding of how wingmen work on Winsor's part.
Honestly, I think the wingman leaving was the absolute BEST thing he could have done for the OP. It's kind of an extention to my Rule of Three, as one guy out with thee girls has an exponentially better chance of pulling than two guys with three girls.
If the wet blanket had come along, then there would have been the real possibility that he comes to his senses, and tries to pick up a girl as well.
This then leaves the third girl alone, jealous, and pissed off. Meaning she'll likey block both of you, and no one is happy.
I guess I should amend the Rule of Three to be the Rule of Two where by when on the prowl, an group of Bros, must not try to pick up chicks from a group LARGER THAN THEIRS unless it meets the following criteria.
Rule of Two:
X - Y >=2
X=number of chicks in a group
Y=number of bros trying to pick up chicks from group X
Of course The Rule of Three is just a subset of the Rule of 2 wherein Y=1.
Edited to add the stipulation that this is only for groups of Chicks, larger than the group of Bros.

This thread was more fun when it was flooded with Top Gun quotes, however I couldn't care less because the Canada-Russia game is too close for missiles so I'm switching to guns!!!
Back to the OP...in exactly what town and at exactly what bar in this town are two guys...a fat one and an ugly one...being swarmed by "cute women" that hold beer pong tournies at their house? I have 17 vacation days that I need to use up before June and this sounds like a great place to visit.

I am definitely walking with some extra swagger this morning.

Typical engineer. Knows how to read a book and recite articles and codes, but has absolutely no clue how to implement them in the real world.
Remember......I've seen you work.
