Default Cabin air filter?

My Totota dealer tells me I should change the cabin air filter in my Rav every second service. It's $50 plus tax. I've never heard of this. Comments? Is this necessary?

I'd get it changed once a year. Especially if its really dusty out and you can smell the dust in the vents.

remove the filter, vacuum dirt and particulates, wipe the vent ducts with a damp towel, return cleaned filter

In your owners manual it will tell you how often to change the filter.

You can buy one from Canadian Tire or any other place and do it yourself. It will take 5 minutes or less.

What does second service amount to? I'd change it once every 1 or 2 years. Just do it yourself, it's typically dead simple.

Hahahah $50... tell your dealer you're never going back for any service because of that piece of advice, they obviously can't be trusted.

I have a Honda, mine cost me $14.99 and was an easy install (just had to unlatch the glove box). I replaced mine once every year or two.

Man dealerships are ridiculous.

Fricken air filter is like $20 at Auto Value. 4 screws (or clips if you're lucky), probably less than a minute to change.
Good old, Toyota. Just like every other manufacturer, raping the customer for stuff that costs them peanuts. Those crackheads try to charge me $50 to rotate my tires. Granted, not every person has a jack and the wherewithall to do it themselves, but I had to surrender my free oil changes because I refused to pay for the tire rotations.

They suggested the tire rotation also. It's only $20 and for that price I don't want to do it myself so I'm having them do it. For the filter, they're doing it but next time I'll tell them no thanks. I understand it'd behind the glove box, so I'll take a look to see what is involved.

Only $20? Which Toyota? I deal with Heninger and they wanted $50 or maybe $40?, but it sure wasn't $20.

If your car is in today call them back and tell them not to do the cabin air filter.

Hell knowing them, they'll just take out your existing one and give it a good shake.

I don't think $50 is exactly raping you on a tire rotation. They have to pay a tech to do it and your vehicle is taking up space in their shop while they're performing the rotation, which means they aren't billing out that space on something more profitable.

I agree dealerships are brutal on some of their charges, but that one seems reasonable from their perspective IMO. And if buddy's getting it done for $20 that is an absolute bargain, although my guess is they must already have his tires off to check his brakes or something since it's so cheap. They would be losing money if they were doing just that for $20 lol.

Like I said, I understand that most people don't have a jack and the wherewithall to do it themselves, what pisses me off is that because I refused to pay someone to do it for me, I lost my free oil changes. That's where the raping occurred.

Lol they charge for tire rotations!? If you buy a set of tires from Fountain Tire you get free lifetime rotations every 10,000 km.

My cabin air filter cost 20 bucks from Cdn Tire and there aren't even any screws to deal with, I just opened the glove box, 1 clip and I was done in 30 seconds, and I'm probably the most mechanically inept person I know of.

It's not in Calgary so wouldn't help you much.

So I access this filter from inside the glove box, huh?

Re the $20 tire rotation, the vehicle was in for a warranty service anyway. Not sure if that's why it was so cheap, but that's what I paid.

On some cars the cabin air filter is hard to access, I think it was on my Jetta they had 2-3 guys working at it for 5-10 minutes to try and get it out. (At Mr. Lube)

Unless it's a Honda pilot, which involves the complete removal of the glove box and 8 other bolts!! Took me 30mins this past weekend!! Brilliant engineering on that one!!

It's weird how much it varies from Honda to Honda... my CR-V was unhook glove box hinge on each side, slide out old air filter, insert new one.

Maybe 5 minutes from start to finish.

My Acura cabin filter is behind the glove box as well. But it's stuck behind a metal bar that houses some cables that needs to be removed.

One day I'll work up the effort to remove the bar and replace/clean the filter.

Nothing's free dude. If you're getting "free" tire rotations it's because they fully plan on charging you for other items while your car is in their shop. Much like 4x4 getting "free" oil changes provided he paid for their $50 tire rotation.
