For those complaining about the 'international' officiating tonight, it was an entirely NHL team.
No Auger either.
Seriously the reffing was not the reason for the loss tonight. Brodeur let in some major momentum sapping goals - right at the start of the game and right after we tied it.
Babcock is making some less than savoury choices as well but I think I'll keep my pitchfork and torch stowed until the tournament is over.

Luongo is playing more predictably right now than Brodeur who looks like he's trying to do too much. Just stop the ones you should and our team should take care of the rest.

Great point, I don't get why CP isn't more excited about this
Canada could lose 1-0 with Luongo making 60 saves, but the blame on him and Vancouver for the olympics failure could be morphed together in to an epic amount of hate
The failures of Canada in every sport at the olympics could become Luongo's fault!

And Marleau. And Heatley.
These guys are scoring machines, but they play with as much intensity as some guys on the backyard rink after Xmas dinner. These are not gutsy players; there's a reason they dominate the season, and never go anywhere in the playoffs ...

That said, when Canada needed offence, who did he turn to? Crosby, Skills and Nash. And the moment he put Iggy on that line, both Crosby and Nash got a lot better. Think on that Babock.
Perry is an idiot... all he's gotta do is bat the puck behind the net, and the Americans don't score that ENG. Instead, he has his stick in the air, and got embarrassed. Also not surprising is that after the top line dominates the Americans for a full minute, he throws Getzlaf and Perry out and the puck ends up in our own net. That third line has been abysmal the entire tournament.
As far as the goaltending goes, can't say as I have confidence in either goalie at this point. Luongo has made a habit of choking in the big game, and Brodeur certainly has not shown he's able to carry the load either. Gonna be dicey from here on out.
|
once isn't a habit.
If it is then Brodeur has certainly developed a habit of choking lately.

I agree 100 per cent. I don't want to pile on these three guys but is there another trio in the league with a worse reputation of disappearing when they need to be clutch?

Heatley has actually created chances every game and has scored in every game. 2 goals in game 1, 1 goal in game 2, 1 goal tonight. Thornton is the one who has vanished as usual.

Yeah. Heatley has been fantastic and Marleau has pretty much ridden his coattails. Thornton is basically the fat kid in Atom hockey. All he does is get in everyone's way.

There was a schedule released before the games, with all the CTV/TSN/Sportsnet broadcast info. And on the qualification games, and I think the Quarter final games it said that Canada would play 430 in those games and the US would be playing in the 12pm slot in those games if necessary.

FWIW, even though I don't have faith in Luongo to win the big game, that does not mean, in this case, that I want him to fail. I suspect the same is true of everyone else here who hates the greaseball with the oversized pads.
We'll see though. Luongo will definitely get another chance after Brodeur's performance tonight.

to be fair russia vs canada in a GMG would have been just epic but i guess winning is what's important...

Go to any American news website right now... Cnn.com, etc., and see what the headline is.

Yes, great point.
The reason that the new breed of butterfly goalie's have had so much success is not a fluke. The difference between the butterfly goalie and the hybrid goalie is pretty simple.
The butterfly goalie (Luongo, Giguere) doesn't always need to see the puck to make the save. Marty generally must be able to see the puck to stop it.
At least two goals tonight would have probably (God I hate myself right now) been routine saves for Luongo.
