He did not demand anything, don't buy that crap the idiots from TSN spew.
What he told Finland was if he was going to sit on the bench he would rather stay home and rest. He did not hold a gun to their heads and demand to be named the starter. There is nothing wrong with what he said.

Lol now he demanded the starting position? Pretty sure he just told Finland that if he wasn't starting he would rather rest up for the stretch drive. I don't blame him either after the rocky relationship between management and him. He EARNED that starting role, wasn't given it!

He wasn't screwing any other goalie. What's wrong with a player wanting to spend time with his family and relax during a break instead of sitting on the bench?
I bet if Brodeur was told he want going to play in the Olympics, but was welcome to join Team Canada in Vancouver he probably would decline too.

That would be like Iginla saying if he had to play on the 4th line he would rather stay home and rest. In YOUR opinion there is nothing wrong with what he said, but I wouldn't like it if a player did that to team Canada, so I'm not going to defend a player for being selfish just because he's doing it to team Finland.

Not even comparable, big difference between a backup who sits on the bench all game long and opens the gate than a 4th line player who is still going to see about 10/12 minutes a game. Nice try though.

Finland's back-up is going to play at least one game (Backstrom is playing their second game), same goes for most teams in this tournament. The back-up isn't just sitting on the bench the entire tournament. Nice try though.

Ya playing 1 game and sitting for potentially the other 5 compared to playing EVERY game is really not comparable.
Get off Kippers back! You don't know the situation.

This is where you and the media have just blown this story into something it's not. He just stated he wanted to start ie; play. If he wasn't going to play, there was no point in him going. Hence why he is here in 2010, and NOT necessarily playing every single game.

Are you for real? Big difference between being a backup who sees one, maybe two games tops (and even that is a stretch with the goaltending depth Finland has), and a 4th liner who gets 10-12 minutes every game. You act like Kipper held a gun up to Kurri's head and demanded to be named starter.

You completely missed the point. I wasn't comparing the roles of a 4th line player to a back-up, what does that have to do with anything? Someone said that Kipper didn't "demand" to be made starter, he just said start me or I'm not coming.... lol, it's the same thing. I brought up the Iginla thing to point out that people would probably feel differently if it was a Canadian player involved in a situation like this, not to compare the difference between a back-up and 4th liner. If that's too difficult for you how about if Luongo or Brodeur did the same thing?

I wouldn't. I don't care who goes to represent our country as long as they give it their all.

Fair enough then, but I do have a problem with a player only coming if they can play a certain role, and I can understand why he has been criticized in the media for it.

Miikka is a cosmic traveller, citizen of the Universe, and bows to no flag or leader. He's not selfish or bigger than his team, but his perspective may sometimes be too wide for us to understand.

Well there's a large difference between playing one prelim game against a junk opponent (backup) and competing for a medal (starter).
Whereas fourth liners play a very large role on the team, especially on Canada.

I don't think he understands that TSD. The role isn't comparable so the means the situation isn't comparable.

Kippur is also the only reason Calgary is anywhere near the playoffs. Miikka could walk up to me and punch me in the face, and I would still back him in every situation.

Wrong.
Kipper knows he'll get ridden like a little red wagon for the rest of the season in Calgary. If he goes to the Olympics, he'll be training/practicing every day during his only 'break'. He told the team that making that sacrifice is not worth it to him, if all he does is get to practice with the national team.
He didn't 'screw' the other goalies. He said 'if you want me to start, you have my number', and Jari Kurri called that number and asked him to start.
