Some teams find a way

True, but Detroit and New Jersey among others have found those types of players picking late in each round... that is why the scouts get paid. Are they earning their pay? Are they getting the job done? I still remember the Tommy Thompson flak, when he wanted the Flames to pick Sergei Samsonov, and the Flames took Daniel Tzaczuk (sp?) instead- because of his "intangibles." I want tangibles, as in someone who can put the puck in the net!

All this "see, look what he can do with a good linemate" is just ridiculous.
Guys like Crosby and Nash and other "first line skilled linemates" aren't just out there for the taking. And the fact that Phaneuf watched tonight's game on TV and wasn't even on the radar for the Olympic team tells me that he wasn't going to fetch anybody quite as talented as so many of us seem to think.
|
But you see, there are at least two posters here who are future NHL GMs... and clearly have it figured out. Phaneuf could have landed a top line player! Sutter just... didn't want to! Or couldn't 'cause he didn't know any better!

That's not really a fair comparison though. Tkaczuk's career was sidelined by concussions. You can't fault the scouts for that.

Yeah Samsonov really would've put us over the top.

It's not like Tkaczuk was a terrible, "off the board" pick. He had a serious head injury and that was essentially the end of his NHL career. It was bad luck for him and the Flames.

My point is that the Flames have "offensively challenged" for many years now. When the NHL changed the rules to open up the game, I thought the Flames would adapt, but IMO, they are still trying to play a game more suited to the pre-lockout days. If you doubt me, look at how the Flames struggle to find 3 shooters with good moves for the shootouts. Nobody on the team is really creative. Iginla is good at blasting the puck, that's not the same thing, and he struggles in the shootouts.

Early in his career, Samsonov was pretty good offensively. But it reflects the team's mindset, that offensively creative players aren't at a premium. My point in that particular message was that there was a falling out in the scouting department, and I'm not sure Calgary got the better end of the deal. Minnesota did better with Tommy Thompson and the guys that went with him.

The Flames were 9th in scoring last year, and tied for 6th in 2005-06. This year's strategy, partly moulded by the known lack of top six scoring, is hardly representative of the Flames offensive performances post lockout.

TSN, Sportsnet, ESPN all change it to 2 goals for Iginla. Nash has been officially credited with the 8th goal.
What a great game for that line though. Iginla's 2nd goal was absolutely beautiful to watch. What a passing play.

How they could not credit Iginla with that goal is beyond me. Whether he gets credit for it or not, that's Iggy's hattrick

I agree. I think it was a tip and a pass backwards through his legs, great play.

Clearly Iggy's hatrick but he is such a class captain to let it go to Nash.

"McElhinney could have had a shutout against Norway too!! "
-Gordo67
"I'm ecstatic about his play and the Nash-Crosby-Iggy line in general. I thought all the lines played well and 7uongo wasn't really tested."
- Megatron
And Glencross could have had a hat trick against Norway too!!!
Iggy wasn't really tested either! (It's not like he was battling through tough coverage all night like he does for the Flames)
When is it going to set in people?
All of the Team Canada players are on the same team, and are competing against the same opponents!
***f..., that looks so obvious when it's written out... when is it going to become obvious to SOME people around here?***
Iginla had a STELLAR game tonight... Luongo made EVERY save possible, including two or three really good ones... Crosby... Heatly... Getzlaf .... Doughty.... Keith.......
and on and on we go...
This is an ALL-star team folks... other than some generally disorganized play in the first period, our guys dominated every shift of the game.
I'm behind every single one of them... 100%.
Oh... and although there has been some good reading here tonight...I almost gave up while scrolling through about HALF A DOZEN PAGES of "IGGY!!!!!!" posts. (not to mention the randomly sprinkled trade suggestions of questionable intelligence, the forlorn wanting of playmaking linemates here for Iginla, and ignorant insults for Perry, Pronger, Luongo, Niedermeyer etc.)
GO CANADA!!!!
SWISS CHEESE SANDWICH COMING RIGHT UP!!!!!!! YUMMMMMMM!
