Thumbs up Online Olympic streams

Some of us are going to be watching the Olympics while at work in a little window ready to minimize at the last second when the boss walks by.

As the host broadcaster, CTV and affiliates appear to be broadcasting everything online in various feeds:

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/tv-online-listings/index.html

Let's use this thread to provide links to more resources, talk about the quality of the streams, etc. Although I'm not against watching TV on a sketchy "free" site because I pay enough for my cable bill at home, to keep CP out of hot water, let's keep the links legal and legit.

I sure hope this stuff works from the U.S. Definitely don't want to be stuck watching the NBC feed.

We're sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed within Canada.

NBC is only streaming hockey and curling, no other live online coverage at all. Absolutely pathetic. Makes me want to walk over to Rockefeller Center and put peanut butter on the door handles.

Anyone not getting any audio on the Canada/Norway curling feed right now on ctvolympics.ca? The ad that runs prior to going live has audio, but no audio during the actual curling.

Not sure if anyone will know this, but NBC requires you to download silverlight to use their player. I'm in my office and don't really want to ask the IT guys to give me permision to watch hockey all afternoon, is there a way around the download? Like some sort of online based way? I obviously have no idea about this stuff.

I second this, only for CTV, not NBC?

find a work-related website that requires Silverlight, then get IT guy to load "cause it's vital to your work productivity"

Does anyone know if Silverlight can run as a Firefox extension/add-on? Or do you have to install it on your computer?

If it is available as an extension, you may want to use a portable version of Firefox on a USB drive (portableapps.com), configure Silverlight on there, and then discretely run it at work. Gets around installing anything on the computer at work.

I couldn't install Silverlight at first when i downloaded it, due to no administrator rights.
When I tried saving it first to my personal drive (H: ), then installing it, it worked fine. Good luck!

Further to my post about portable apps, you might be able to install Silverlight on a personal machine and then drag the files over into the appropriate folder on your PortableApps version of Firefox:

http://portableapps.com/node/14188 (scroll all the way down to the last post)

I can't test it right now because, well, I AM the IT guy and yes, Silverlight is installed and I am watching curling.

Are you on a Mac? I was having the same problem while trying to watch the feeds through firefox on my Mac, but when I switched to Safari it started working fine.

Womens snowboard cross was pushed to a later start time, so all we have had this morning is curling on these streams....

Interesting - I'm on a PC with Firefox. I just tried it on IE and the audio was there. I don't have Safari installed so I can't test with that.

I'd blame the Microsoft Monopoly, but that doesn't explain the fact that it works with Safari. Anyone on Firefox get audio?

I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough to take a guess why this happens but I had the same problem when I first got my Mac and was trying to listen to the Fan 960 through Firefox. Even then I couldn't get the audio to work for more than just the commercials for some reason, but Safari would work. Maybe some of the more computer literate folks here could educate me why this audio ?glitch? happens. Glad you got it working though.

Interestingly, I am able to watch the USA-Swiss game with audio in both FF and IE. It is only the on-ice audio, however, but it is audio nonetheless.

Not sure why it would happen... next time I come across it I'll try updating Silverlight or something like that.

I am impressed with the quality of the stream of this US/Swiss hockey game. Audio and video is pretty solid. Full screen is clear and mostly smooth too.

I am getting all the audio, not just the on ice stuff. Using IE.

Be careful with the Silverlight streams. If it can use the bandwidth, it will, and it uses a lot: the highest quality runs in at 500 kb/sec! There's no way to change it (that I could find) other than rate limiting software (the little "speed" bars in the bottom right tell you what rate you're getting).

It would suck to have to explain to IT why you burned through 5 GB of bandwidth watching a hockey game.
