CTVolympics.ca video doesn't work for mac?
I have been trying to watch some Olympic coverage on www.ctvolympics.ca and I just can't get it to work for my mac. I have upgraded siverlight for both Safari and Firefox but still nothing works. I checked to see if there any updates for either of the browsers and I have the most recent version.
I did a little research online and it seems a lot of people are having this problem... no solutions though.
Anyone on CP having this problem? Any solutions you can think of?
This would be a major fail for CTV if they didn't make their video compatible with Apple products. I did notice that they advertise that the site is powered by Microsoft though.

Works fine on Mac OS X 10.6.2 in FF 3.5.7 and Safari 4.0.4.

I'm running 10.6.2 and it's working over here. This thread is actually a lifesaver ... I have a friend coaching a skater this afternoon and I forgot to upgrade to silverlight. We're rolling now though.

No problems on my MBP or my Mini (using Safari). Video is a little choppy at the highest quality, but otherwise it's brilliant.

I'm ignorant when it comes to Macs...
Can't you just update your OS? Instead of upgrade?

Yes and no. When Apple released Snow Leopard (10.6) last August/September you had to buy a 30 dollar disc to go form 10.5.whatever to 10.6.

It works on both 10.5 and 10.6
Open safari, click on Safari icon top left, and unselect "block pop-up windows".
That might fix it.

Going from Leopard (10.5) to Snow Leopard (10.6) is like going from Windows Vista to Windows 7... except that it costs $35 instead of $150.
(So, yes, it is an upgrade.)

And other than getting space back in my HD I'm not smart enough to notice a HUGE difference.

I'll give that a try tonight, thanks for the suggestion! I find it hard to believe that an OS is the determining factor when wanting to watch online videos, but you never know.
I was going to upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am going to be buying a new iMac or Powerbook soon. Seems like it would be a waste of money when I will be getting it on the new computer anyway.

It is not a browser or OS problem. I am almost certain- I have virtually every Mac imaginable in my office and it works on 10.4, 10.5, 10.6. It does not work however on any non-intel machines.
I know there are forums out there that give solutions to getting silverlight to work on powerpc's, but most of those suggestions do not work.
Which leads to the next question- Are you using a PowerPC or intel machine?

Yup, will not work at all on my PowerPC. Time to buy a new Mac soon I think.

I believe that was one of the goals. I think many things were rebuilt from the ground up, but built to look exactly the same.
I remember hearing one interesting story from a podcast. Before snow leopard if you had a dvd in your mac and one of your applications was using the dvd, it wouldn't eject. Not a huge problem until you had 10 apps running at once and no idea why your disc wouldn't eject.
Snow Leopard brought in a feature that would pop up a little window saying "sorry, that disc can't be ejected because application x is using it". As simple as it sounds, I guess that problem was so deeply rooted in the OS that the only way to fix it was to rebuild the entire thing from the ground up.

Sweet Jesus. You may have just fixed my #1 reason for hating safari. It does that by default but I've never thought to turn it off for some reason.

Yup, a PowerPC. I have a 1st generation G5 iMac. Bought it right when they released it about 4 - 5 years ago. This would make more sense than an OS problem. I can see Silverlight requiring an intel processor.

I've had issues with that site using XP and Google Chrome. Had to open up old IE to watch the games.

Much of that is smoke and mirrors, by the way. They change how they count gigabytes in the finder, so that a gig is 1000 megs, not 1024. That, and on a fresh install, they don't include gigs worth of printer drivers anymore since the printer preference pane can now invoke System Update to pull down drivers from Apple.
I believe they did some other small tweaks to gain disk space like compressing the Apple-supplied apps, but on say, a 160 gig disk, 4 gigs of that space savings can now be attributed to a rounding error in how they count gigabytes.

I'm on a PowerPC G5 myself.... no Olympic videos for me. I hope Silverlight doesn't catch on.
