Ribs - Who's got the best?
Where can the best pork back ribs be found here in Calgary? Or within a short driving distance?
For a comparison, I'm trying to find ribs like I found at Bāton Rouge in Montreal. They were so good, that if Westjet has a seat sale for under $150, I'll be going for a day trip just divulge in this epicurean delight. They were extremely thick and meaty, nicely smoked, and fell off the bone when you picked it off the plate (To this day I'm not sure how they even got them onto the plate). You could tell they were slowly cooked and not the usual quickly cooked and sauced ribs you find elsewhere.
So where's the best ribs in Calgary?

You won't find really good ribs in Calgary but Palamino would be your best bet anyway.

Memphis Blues is BBQ heaven - Just don't make the horrible mistake of going there the day before you drive back to Calgary. Makes sharing the car a bit... uncomfortable.

Pretty sad that they think it's necessary to point out her sickly, gross illness... As if we wouldn't notice.
Somebody buy this woman a burger, fries, milkshake, and a side of ribs...

I find it amazing that with all the ethnic cuisine you can get in a city like Calgary. You can not find a decent BBQ joint. I wonder why that is? Does BBQ not appeal to most Canadians? I'm not talking about a gas fired grill. I'm talking slowly cooked meat in a wood fired pit. When I travel to Kansas City to watch the Chiefs, I'm just as excited about devouring ribs and pork sandwiches as I am about attending the game at Arrowhead.
If any of you are ever in Kansas City. Be sure to check this place out. Big line up, but well worth the wait.

Our lack of usable hardwood species is probably the main reason why it's very hard to get good BBQ here. You have to import it all in and that can get very expensive.

Best I've ever had. I have the recipe for the sauce at home and love using it when I make ribs.

Good point. Importing wood could be difficult because of disease. Could be a cultural thing as well. If Calgary had a large Texan population a BBQ joint would pop up. For now it would be something that the average Albertan would not aspire for.

No way. It's a cultural thing more than anything. There are very few BBQ places in Canada period despite plenty of hardwood species in Eastern Canada.
In Canada people think BBQ = grilling or the chicken you get at Swiss Chalet. Since BBQ is more a southern thing, I suspect it has to do with ability to cook outside year round and the sweltering temperatures that in the past mandated cooking outside in the summer.

Where? I think real BBQ places are as rare in Quebec as anywhere else in Canada.
