Default Is it legal to...

...cross the road from the alley on the left (under the bush) into the alley on the right (in front of the black wagon), straight across 1-way southbound 5th avenue?

I would say yes, as long as you don't impede any traffic along 5th ave.

No. You may turn left into the curb lane only.

Now what do I win?

Why is it illegal, because it's multiple lanes? Or because it doesn't count as an intersection?

It's not an intersection. There is no road to convey you to the other side.

Think about it another way - if lanes could be treated like roads, why would anyone use the roads? We'd all be zipping along in the lanes avoiding the traffic lights.

I don't know if it's illegal but I worked in one of those buildings for twelve years . . . my office faced that way and I can't tell you how many near and actual accidents I saw there because of people trying to zip into that parking lot or to the outside lane.

I ended up hitting someone doing that just up the street . . . came shooting out of the alley behind cityTV during rush hour I was in the very last lane (by Chophouse) and smoked him . . . he was ruled at fault . . .

Because you are required to treat each one like a stop sign. 20-30 km/hr with traffic pulling in all the time to the alley, stopping every time- that is why I only use them to get out and may cross one main street to get to the correct direction of one-way.

I would agree, your only allowed to turn into the nearest available lane.

This is a gold mine for handing out tickets... I moved away from Calgary quite a few years ago but I wonder if the cops use the same trap at Center St. and 6th Ave that they used to...

Northbound on Center St. turning left onto 6th Ave, the traffic cops, usually 12-15 cops, would stand around the corner out of view and absolutely nail the cars turning onto 6th Ave, like shooting fish in a barrel, unreal the money they made there.

Caution and common sense needs to be thrown away to follow the law in this case... The law states you have to take the first available lane, the curb lane, so you would have to wait for a chance to turn in the busy traffic, and then giver hard left (right beside the busy sidewalk where the people are stepping of the curb with a "walk" light...) Remember your blindsiding them from over their right shoulder. Or get a ticket, and if you hit the pedestrian of course you were also at fault... The City sure made some cash there.

Well, that is very different as there are "No Left Turn" signs there."

Looks like you can still turn there of the peak hr's & Sat. Sun. Hard to read the signs.

Those bleachers there would be where the cops would hide.

The Chamber of Commerce was a Mr. Sub for a few decades, real busy spot. Those were good subs.

Looking at the photo the cops could give you five illegal lane change tickets if you went alley to alley.

He wants to know if it's legal to drive straight across 4 lanes of a one-way avenue from a parking lot to another alley.

I can only assume that a ticket has been issued and he's checking to see if the ticket will stick or if he should fight it

Of course it's illegal, you'll hit that white truck along the way!
