Bahahaha! This is great! I look forward to the SModcast on this whole ordeal. Smith can be merciless to people who've pissed him off.

if Kevin Smith is too fat to fly, that would prohibit at least 50% of the US population from getting on planes

Kevin Smith is enormous now. I remember seeing him on the Hour and was shocked. He was always a heavier guy but he just became a behemoth over the last couple years.
However, I am not defending the airline.

So the general public who is overweight enough to take up more than one seat should be required to adhere to Southwest's policy but celebrities shouldn't? Whether you agree with the policy or not, they enforced it with him just like everyone else. If he's always purchased two seats in the past, it seems he was aware of their policy.
I have, involuntarily, shared half my seat with a large stranger on a four and a half hour flight. I only wish the airline I was on would've required him to purchase two seats since he needed the extra room.

I don't think his issue is the policy.
I don't think his issue is following the policy.
I think his issue is that they shouldn't say "We have a seat available for you", get his luggage on board, wait for him to sit down and THEN say "you can't have that seat".
They should have realized that it was a concern BEFORE his luggage was loaded and he was seated in the seat.
Based on what he said on "The Hour", he has been depressed the last couple of years and has been stuffing himself. But he really intends on losing the weight for the sake of his life.

If you listened to the Smodcast...he buys two seats because he can...not because he has too. If I could afford 2 seats, hell ya I'd buy them.
He also fit in ONE seat on a later flight with SouthWest...obviously that pilot didn't think he was too big to fly

I think they recognized him as the director of Gigli and a friend of Ben Affleck and through him off of the plane as a service to the rest of their customers.
