Not only was I alive but I was at the opening ceremonies and i can say that as cheesy as they look now and as aged as they look now, it was incredibly fun, it made sense and it didn't have people looking at each other and saying "I don't get it"
The closing ceremonies were the first that had the mass entry of the athletes and it was a blast.

the ceremony took a nose dive as soon as KD Lang took the stage. i mean really, Canada can't get a better entertainer up there to sing a song than a manbearpig?

She certainly wasn't the right choice to sing what is a very awesome song.

Rick Hansen was in both ceremonies. I think he should have lit the cauldron. I think his humanity trumps that of Wayne Gretzky, with all due respect.

Does CP show up easier on your phone than tsn or ctv? Not trying to be a jerk, honest question. I can't get CP to work right on my blackberry, but most of the big news sites work just fine.

Maybe the idea to have Wayne ride around in a vehicle for a while was to get people to realize that what they were seeing was about to pass by their house, and get them to pour out onto the street and cheer as they went by, but apparently nobody remembered that it was mostly drunks on the street at that time, as everyone else was inside watching the thing wondering WTF was going on. I can see a spontaneous street party caught live on TV for the world to see being pretty cool, but instead it just came off as pretty crazy, especially with the weather.

If they wanted a great spontaneous street party they should have put the cauldron on the Red Mile.

Brief synopsis of the lighting. Gretzky, Catriona Lemay Doan, Rick Hansen, Steve Nash, and Nancy Green each had a torch and lit the structure simultaneously. At least that was the plan.

Wow that was interesting. Kind of wish I would have followed this thread while I was watching it unfold, but still entertaining to read through after the fact.
Highlights for me:
- Disarray in the executive suite at the start of the ceremony
- Fake wind flailing at its attempt to blow the flag
- KD Lang trying to pull off an Elvis impersonation (at least in appearance).
- The awkward silence and nervous looks on all the torch lighters while Vancouver organizers were trying to contact the pot head controlling the cauldron/torch controls.
- Gretzky riding in the back of a pickup truck in Bizarro town followed by a random gaggle of drunks on a neverending search in a rainstorm for another cauldron to light.
Wow there was a lot of unintentional comedy in this event.

I just read all 53 pages, pretty funny to go back and see everyone's comments now that it is over. Definitely needed a longer 'moment' of silence. Some really cool effects that weren't overly cheesy, and there were rollerblades!!
I found it sort of appropriate to have KD Lang sing as she sang for 88 as well, sort of an odd song choice but it does reflect diversity even if she did confuse a many athlete with her gender.
Overall I really enjoyed it, but that hole in the ground where the missing part of the torch didn't rise up is a terrible eye sore..

I enjoyed it, and I think KD Lang did an amazing job with an amazing song. It was my favorite part of the ceremonies I think. The lighting at the end was kind of embarrassing, hydraulics must of been made in the USA
