Ok, so a few years ago I made the mistake of signing on with Alberta Energy & Savings LP. I called them today and the buyout of my contract is now down to a more reasonable lvl.

Who is providing the cheapest rates these days for gas & electricity? I live in a condo that only has 2 exterior walls and my power & gas can be almost $400 during the winter months. Pretty sure that is to high.

Any suggestions on who is providing the best rates would be greatly appreciated.

I just switched to Enmax from Direct Energy and am happy with their rates. I'd avoid Direct Energy like the plague.

Did you have to sign a contract with them? Or do you have to sign a contract with everyone? Been ages since I looked into this.

You don't have to sign any contracts with Enmax. When you realize that, it makes you wonder why any company is able to sign people on for a contract. You can lock in the a rate at Enmax for 5 years that is lower than direct energy (much lower than Alberta Energy Savings), and you can get out of it any time you want.

Enmax is the easy answer for electricity in Alberta. There's not a lot of difference for gas, but I prefer to have both of my accounts with the same company, so Enmax it is.

We are on with EnMax... so far so good.

You are definitely getting ripped off if your condo costs ~$400 during the winter.

For electricty, gas, water, sewage and recylcling, my entire EnMax bill came to $288.11 in the month of January.

i own a 1000 sq ft bungalow, and rarely (maybe once a year) does my total enmax bill go over $300.

Current Rates on a fixed 5 year:

Enmax
Gas - $7.99 per GJ
Power - $0.08 per kW

Direct Energy
Gas - $7.99 per GJ
Power - $0.1099 per kW

Alberta Energy Savings (apparently called "just Energy" now):
Is so embarrassed about their high rates they don't even publish them on their website.

Enmax also will give you back $100 a year if you get both gas and power from them.
Direct Energy introduced a new program recently (apparently) where you get only $20 back per year if you get both.
Enmax has no contracts on any of their plans. You can switch at any time.
Also, with Enmax, the City has often taken profits out of Enmax to help to lower Property taxes in the city. That's an additional benefit.

I had my gas through Direct Energy.

I remember having to pay the 200$ "deposit", which never decided to show back up as credit on my account (they said it would after a year) - until I actually called them and made a point to a CSR.

Mistake my @ss.
