Saw this on the travel channel over the weekend...unbelievable.

The contest costs $50 and is a 28" Pointersaurus pizza which weighs ten pounds. Two people are allowed one hour to eat the pizza with either two meat toppings or four vegetable toppings. You must make a reservation at least one day in advance and the contest is only done at 3 PM each day. If contestants finish the pizza they are refunded their money and given a check for $500.

These kind of things just fascinate me...there was another one where it was 8 OZ of hamburger cooked thru, topped with 3 fried eggs, 8 pieces of bacon and then served between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Just unreal.

You can use the $500 to help pay a fraction of what your quadruple bypass surgery costs!

Had to be more than an 8oz burger, that's a standard/small burger patty. Unless those are some epic grilled cheese sandwiches it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to polish off. Sounds insanely delicious though.
Shula's steakhouse has a challenge that requires a 48oz steak in 20 minutes, I believe only the Man v. Food guy has pulled it off.

I was watching the Food Network years ago and some other place does a contest like this, however only 2 people are allowed to eat it. I forget the size, but I know it was over 24", and they only had an 1 hour to do it.
Me and my friend can eat a 18" pizza ourselves, eating a 28" pizza with 8 other people would seem easy.

Competitive eating is a sad, strange, dark place.
This is closer in genre to gambling really, and much like in any other context, the house tends to win. Is there any regulations requiring the establishment to actually make it potentially feasible to even eat the whole thing?

What's gross is that you were in New York and ate at Papa John's.

Would it possibly be the place in the OP with the 28" pizza and the 2 person/1 hour cap?

I don't know where else you tried pizza, but I have a Papa John's on my corner and only go there if I'm too drunk to bother walking down a few blocks to get a good slice.
There are some garbage places here though, so if you had the misfortune of finding those I can see how papa johns climbed the list.

I can eat a large 12" Volos to myself, no problem whatsoever.
If it's a good pie I could easily eat half of it.

We tried Sbarro's my Madison Square Garden, Some little shop across the street from it and some place in SoHo (really good but way to far to even think about going to regularly)
We did tend to be drunk and tired and the deal the guys gave us made it way more appealing.
It was actually quite tasty from what I remember.

Are you sure you didn't just go to the Malborough mall food court?

Went to NY, and ate Sbarro and Papa John. Aside from eating pizza, did you spend the rest of your trip at Walmart or renting movies?

But I thought you said you were bored in New York, because you were under 21?
