Reports that McGowan had his first off mount thorwing session today and that it went well. Hopefully the guy can get back to health and resume what was looking like a promising career. He definitely had the physical stuff to be an above average pitcher.

Good news, I'd have him start on the DL but not push him. It;s real encouraging to see him recover to the point of pushing the org to a decision like the one they'll have to make. Him and Morrow are going to really give this Left-handed Muskateers line-up we are going see out there, a real nice combo to keep hitters in a series from getting too comfy.
What do y'all think o' the Damon and Delgado rumors? Cito likes Delgado for his roving back up coaching potentials. Damon would hit lead off and he texted he would do it for the right deal according to SI.
Just on the tangent type stuff///Drunkjaysfans are a good site to get a sense of real BLue jay fervour from a fanbase. I think Goze schooled us to that one and it stuck. The comments can be good reading if you can take the toronto!??! It's surprisingly distinct. Let me know if you think so. You think this board can get vicious, ha. These internet tough guys are poppin' up like the i-Crap.
I haven't heard any Damon rumors myself, but I'm personally not a fan of the guy at all. His fielding is absolute junk (I guess as on OFer you can get away with that), and I'm not a fan of his bat although he can come up clutch. I don't think they're in need of a guy like that either (the complacent type). I would have really liked to see the Jays target a guy like Thome who has pop to his bat, but can at the same time accept his role as a bench player at this point in his career. As for Delgado, I used to love the guy back in the day, but he's now a minor leaguer and has zippo to offer with his weight loss (lost the power), and has no speed whatsoever to boot. He also gets me as a crybaby if things don't go his way, and at this point in his career, nothing is going to go his way. I also don't believe in "mentorship" in today's game. Aside from special guys like Halladay, the only things veterans teach young players is how to score with better pickup lines off the field.
So far, I kinda like what AA's doing. He's not half assing the rebuild. He's getting some good prospects and is not misleading the public just to sell tickets. The fans aren't dumb in baseball for the most part. They can tell if a team stinks. The Jays this year should be mediocre, but with the young arms up and coming, they should be pretty solid 3 years down the road. If somehow Lind, Snyder, Hill and Wells can find their power stroke this year, this team could surprise a few people.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, yet I think you make good points.
Re: AA, this guy is getting full marks from me so far and then some. I think him discussing the possibilities of such commodities shows another side to him. He has a budget but he is trying to get to a workable contender, IMO. Also, I think he has a larger budget than people consider, but he is as you say getting nice prospects to rebuild with. Why not look at these options? I think the coaching that delgado could provide for the younger hitters would be valuable and the professionalism that Damon would bring could go a long way with such young malleable minds. He also would fill a need, decent speed at the leadoff spot. Delgado is a pro and would play for peanuts apparently. I think the two of us are too far removed from the internal workings of their environments that we will only be able to view the televised games. And can I ask why you don't believe in Mentorship? Is that serious about the pick up lines? I think that is a definitely a big part of it but also there would be some restaurants that Delgado would still be huge at or get huge at. The rogers corp have dough, and are committed to a rebuild. That is an interesting combo, so why not pick up some garbage heap vets and a championship winning leadoff hitter?
I think this team is destined to be mediocre, but I do remember thinking this team would contend and have been disappointed before. This team could catch lightning in a bottle and surprise, but the rotation has to be phenomenal. No more of that 6hr games at Fenway, cecil.

TBQH, I don't know why I think mentorship is bunk, but I do. I think it comes down to modern times where the "kids" are making millions, and really don't care to perfect their craft because they're getting by on natural abilities. With pitchers it's completely different and totally agree on it, but hitters, not at all. Kevin Millar I thought was a good pickup last year, but do I think he made a long term impact on anyone? No. I could see how Damon would be a decent pickup to lead off, but at the same time, I'd kinda like to see a big bat or nothing at all (save the money for a contending year). Damon wouldn't come cheap I'd think ~ $12M? Anyway, getting back to the mentorship thing, I think where most of it drudged up from was from years back. I live in Toronto and my cousin was at a bar was some friends and stuff and Shannon Stewart was there and was shooting the crap with them. The topic came up of groupies and stuff and he basically said that from top to bottom, almost all the hitters party/cheat on their spouses, but the pitchers are completely different - always focused on their craft and barely associate with anyone. This story basically has nothing to do with old/young, but I'm saying players do what they want, and what types of role models are some of these vets if they do what they do? I don't think the younger players care to take instructions. They may listen to the hitting coach, but I don't see the value of a roster spot with a washed up guy. If he were a hitting coach, fine, but a player, I'm not so sure.

I agree that Damon would pretty much just be money spent to try and draw a few extra fans. I wonder how well his numbers would be if he's not hitting in the new Yankee Stadium, and not having guys like Jeter, Texeira, and Rodriguez hitting all around him? If he's on the Jays I bet his average is in the 260's, his slugging is low 400's and his on base might be 350. His speed is no longer anything special, and his defence is terrible.
The team is already concerned about it's corner defence using guys like Snyder and Lind and than factor in Wallace not really having a position to play either. So by adding guys like Damon and or Delgado I don't know if it really accomplishes anything. Plus Wells should be playing left field too given his range and arm.

From what I read AA spoke to Damon to see if he could sign him at a cheap rate. Jays need a lead-off hitter I am sure AA is looking to find a player that can fill that need. However there is no way Damon will sign with the Jays
As for Delgado, Gaston is rumoured to be pushing really hard to have him signed. Delgado would only act as the DH. As I am betting Wallace will be the every day 1st Baseman and Overbay will be traded.
I would also bet, there is no way Delagado will sign with the Jays. Lind will be the DH once again and play some time in the Field.
Apparently the jays have signed another reliever, Kevin Gregg. A lot of fans are saying he's a long-ball friendly pitcher, but he did save 30 games twice and kind of regressed last year. His regression was noticeable on the road but his home splits were dominant. Perhaps, he regains some of his velocity that has allegedly departed him leading to the long ball talk and becomes a good closer again. This move could spell the trade of Downs and or, Frasor.
I like the move (I believe he has signed a 1 year deal and will be the closer), now I hope the Jays will trade Downs for a prospect (hopefully a shorts stop).
I like AA as mentioned before, and think he reached out to Downs simply because he had to. Now that he's got Gregg, there's a good chance Downs will be moved (bridges have been burned IMO). Anyway, I hope they get a good return when they do deal him.
Dana Eveland... LHP, bad stats with bad teams but nice minor league numbers, I don't follow their respective teams and don't know about the competition he faced. He apparently has good stuff but not great success in the bigs, or any success for that matter. He could be a good relief option. Yet, he has made starts so anything could happen in spring training. If anything, I'm loving what AA is doing. Wow, this guy is on the job. On his honeymoon, he was on the 'job', 2fold. It feels like JP was his old bitter uncle and easily forgotten, or it's like uncle leo trying to hang with Jerry.

Reason: uncle leo
Blue Jays reliever Dirk Hayhurst underwent surgery to repair fraying in the labrum of his right shoulder on Friday, and he is expected to be sidelined for most of the upcoming season.
The Blue Jays have added a second former general manager to their payroll.
Jim Beattie, former GM of both the Montreal Expos and the Baltimore Orioles, has been hired as a pro scout. He joins former Chicago Cubs GM Ed Lynch on the Jays' revamped scouting staff.
...
Under new GM Alex Anthopoulos, the Jays have more than doubled their scouting staff and will have 69 scouts in place this season.
I can't argue with the approach of building a good scouting staff. Now so long as they're willing to draft the top players and make the commitment to sign those guys it should be highly beneficial to the organization.
It's a longer term way to do it in Baseball as it will mean a few losing seasons to get your 1 or 2 shots at winning. But you should get good legitimate chances to win if you do it right, and if you can expand your payroll maybe buy yourself a couple extra years to take your shot.

Could Overbay play 3B? Cannon arm, great footwork, high baseball IQ.
I'm thinking if this new guy acquired from the Doc trade, Wallace, is the everyday 1st baseman then Overbay and Encarnocion could platoon 3B on handedness (with Overbay backing up Wallace), Snider/Wells/Lind in RF/CF/LF, Ruiz and Bautista as a supersubs then that's a full lineup with a lot of very friendly or expiring contracts.
But if Overbay is a liability at 3B then this team looks a lot worse. I can't think of many lefties on the hot corner, is it a bad idea?
