All of you 'stats' guys who see that White has more points than Dion, therefore is as good or better, do not understand hockey. It makes me sick. These are the same people that think Dion sucks because he is having a sub-par year(s), even though we could make the argument about every flame over the same time. If you listen to most professionals (I'm watching OTR and they all say it's a terrible trade for Calgary. These are Toronto fan590 guys etc) they all know how bad it is.
I am embarrassed to be a Flames fan because of all the uneducated Flames 'fans' that say Dion stinks. You are the ones that sent him out of town, I wish you would follow.

I'm generally the optimist when it comes to the Flames, but this one is just a tough pill to swallow. I admit the Flames are a better team right now, but NOT that much better...Long term, this will go down as terrible trade.

Maybe some Flames fans are over valuing Phaneuf? Perhaps there was not much of a market for him and the return Sutter got was the best? If the rumored NY deal for Phaneuf was true then this might be true.
I think what we got for Phaneuf is pretty reasonably. This was mainly a salary dump but we did get some very serviceable parts and a lot of wiggle room.
In my mind Phaneuf had to go. I lean very heavily on the fact that he was a major problem on the team. I believe the stories about him have legs and he simply did not fit anymore on this team.
I am happy with Hagman and I believe Sutter is not done. We won't miss Dion...

My opinion though is that it became clear to those in the know, i.e. those that see how the flames locker room interacts on a daily basis, that moving Dion was the best thing. Regardless of Dion's INDIVIDUAL talent, if he is making the team worse its all for not. When the Flames went to the finals, the city fell in love with the TEAM becasue they played as one. Since Dion has been part of the core (and arguably his buddy Langkow) this has not seemed like a 'team'. This is Iggy and Reggie's team again, and I am actually hopeful that this will be a huge step forward for the flames. Risky...yes. Huge risk for Toronto as well though since they are hoping that he is more like his 22 y/o self than his 24 y/o self. The knee jerk crowd asking for Sutters head need to take a breath, relax, and see how this plays out instead of pretending that they have a crystal ball that guarentees Dion is destined for greatness.

Morris is not comparable to Dion.

Fan's did not send Dion out of town, our lack of scoring did. Gotta give something to get something, and he was our best tradable asset. Was he underperforming? Yes, it is safe to say that.

I don't like it but I can understand and accept it. I personally think Phaneuf is going to have an excellent career. Something had to be done though...

Well not with 20/20 hindsight, but thats not the point. The point is, that at one particular point in time, Morris was considered a future norris cantidate. We all know how that turned out. Not all 'future stars' work out...thats just the way it is. I wonder how the Daigle fan club is doing these days.
You are obvioulsy a huge Dion fan and are upset that he was traded - I get that. But for $6.5 million a year, Dion needs to be a norris cantidate NOW, and he is not even close. In fact, he is being passed development wise by his own draft year and those after him (hmmmm...kinda reminds me of that Morris guy).

Woke up today and I still find it hard to believe Dion Phaneuf is gone.
Seen him in Leafs silks and how happy they seem to have him on the team, then I look at Mayers, Hagman, Stajan, and White and grumble.
I was never super anti-Phaneuf, but did believe Bouwmeester made him expendable and if the right package were to become available he should be traded. I stress the right package.
Ugh...

Funny how the same knee-jerk crowd that wanted Dion and Iggy traded last week, wants Sutter fired this week. Yes, Sutter has made his mistakes, but that doesn't make many of you an expert on what is best for the team. I love a healthy debate, but I hate rants, boycotts and anger without a cause or from lack of knowledge.

I am a fan. I wouldn't have traded him. And if I did, at least get a superstar in return, a top prospect, or 1st rounders. That is why I am so angry.
Watching OTR this afternoon, the one reporter was saying that he has talked to different gm's and they were all baffled. Those gm's would have thrown together offers better than what we received from TO.
Flames get Iginla, Dallas get Nieuwendyk. Dallas wins the cup.
Flames get (superstar), (team) get Phaneuf. Calgary wins the cup.
We didn't get a superstar in return, nor will we win with these players.

I'm surprised no one brought up the TSN Phaneuf stat propaganda:
Since joining the league, he's:
1st in shots for all d-men.
1st in goals for all d-men.
1st in GWG for all d-men.
1st in douchiness for all NHL players.

I find it quite amazing how most on here are saying that this trade makes the Flames a better team now, but worse off down the road. Players come and go, and if you can somehow see the future and what the team will look like down the road, hell, even tomorrow - I wish you would share with the rest of us. Dion Phaneuf may not be here anymore, but to state that team will suffer down the road is pure speculation, as no one knows what the future holds for this team, little own its players and Dion Phaneuf.

If you look at it with what it cost to get him, this is what it looks like.
Out
Leopold, Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie and a 3rd
In
Bouwmeester, White, Hagman, Stajan, and Mayers
The In column looks a heck of a lot better than the Out column
