After tomorrow you can count on No Joke and Hagman together for the Flames this just gets more wacko. Thought you were going to play with Finnish countryman, nope your traded too.
Sutter is addicted to trading now. lol

Terrible trade.
Unless the Flames win the cup, this move is a complete bust.
Dion should never have been moved.

I just thought of something when I heard Komisarek's name on TSN. Toronto now have 2 of the 3 NHL players Elisha Cuthbert dated. It'll be interesting if Burke trade for Sean Avery.

I think Sutter made a mistake when he signed Dion to the mega deal that Dion got - he needed to be a $5M tops. I blame Kevin Lowe and other for the offer sheets that seemed to force Sutter to sign Dion to too big of a contract. I hate the idea of paying for potential.

And I think that the one thing that Sutter does, is fix his mistakes. With the cap next year being in doubt, the Flames needing more offense and a shake up, he did what he needed to do to make the team better today. And he might have given Dion a chance to bring it to the next level. Since he has been here, Darryl has done nothing but try to make this team better. If you listen to him talk, really listen to him, he has been very clear about what is needed here. And if you look at most of the moves he has made, all of them have been well intended.

I wish Dion the best of luck in TO, and look forward to seeing the new guys tomorrow (tonight).

I'm going to be missing Aulie and only Aulie. I'm especially going to miss seeing him play in Abby. Best of luck Aulie.

Watching many of Hagman and Stajan's goals from this year, it seems like they've got some good chemistry together already. Maybe it would be worthwhile keeping them together and slotting a RW (Iginla) in to play on their line.

I understand 'time' will tell how well we do....

How this trade looks is exactly how someone would treat their investments...

We had all our RSPs in a long term investment that had a super high chance of a great return in many years. That investment starts going down and down...but it was supposed to be a long term investment. We panicked and invest in what is hot right now for the quick gain. Both choices are a risk, but now it seems all our eggs aren't in the same basket and are spread among different stocks. None of them sexy, just serves a purpose. We'll find out how the immediate results does come June..

Oh for sure it was Klowe's fault. It was good thing he pulled that crap 1 year earlier.

Phaneuf at $6.5mil/year is not based on him regressing.

I am suprised at the negative reaction to the trade... I like it myself. It may have been mentioned in the first 42 pages of this thread, but ...

It was obvious to me that this team was not going to achieve all we thought it could when this core was built. I define the core as Iginla, Kiprusoff, Regher, Langkow, and formely Phanuef. Since the lockout, the Flames have underachieved. During that time, we've changed coaches, and pretty all the surrounding players at least once if not twice. The only thing left to change was the core. I would argue that Phanuef was the most marketable amd so with Bouwmeester on the team, Phanuef gets traded. I'd say that Bouwmeester is now part of my 5 unit core.

Coming back, we have a pretty good center in Stajan and a decent two way player in Hagman. I remember him being really good for the Stars. And Stajan has a lot of upside in my mind; remember, he has only played on a disfunctional Leafs team.

I like the trade!

And, I like Phanuef ... I have an Authentic jersey from 03/04 that I got when he was drafted. I even made the trip to Red Deer numerous times to watch him play for the Rebels back in the day. Not that I am anything special for doing it, it just goes to show that I was not a Phanuef hater...

Totally. Even if Jokinen is still around tomorrow, I wouldn't count on any magical chemistry between him and Hagman just because they played together ages ago.

Hmm something tells me that if someone posted this trade as a proposal, you'd be one of the first posters to laugh at it....

I think if any of this was ever posted on here, it would get laughed at and said it looks like HF crap.

Just to comment on Hagman:

It's weird to hear all this inconsistency talk, considering that everytime I've seen him play for Team Finland, he's been an absolute stud. Yeah, not the greatest sniper you'll see, but total effort every shift, every situation, everywhere. He's basicly the prototype (among others) of why Team Finland has kept overachieving in the highest level (olympics/world cup): total commitment.

That said, I can totally understand why he hasn't been like that at the Leafs, and besides, age tends to mellow people down. Still, I think a lot people here will like Hagman.

About the trade overall, I think this just shows that Sutter wasn't kidding when he was talking about how hard it is to make midseason moves these days. You can scratch all of West as trading partners right from the start, as nobody on this side wants to give the Flames anything that would help them make the playoffs. (Except maybe Edmonton, but I think we can agree that wasn't happening.)

From the Eastern conference, nobody that's doing well and with a head on their shoulders would touch a Phaneuf-trade, because nobody has that kind of offenside depth, and nobody wants to risk taking in a rumoured cancer with a huge salary. Deal like that could ruin a team trying to make the playoffs.

There's only two team out of the playoff picture in the East: Carolina and Toronto. We don't know what Carolina offered for Phaneuf, but I'm not shocked that it wasn't better than what we got from Toronto. And say what want about Torontos plugs, that team has scored more goals than this team, and how sad is that...

I agree with most of what you say, but:

Hagman at $3M is not tremendous value. He's decent, I tend to believe that ~25 goal scorers at his age and cap hit are available for a guys like Sarich + Aulie.

I really hope Stajan doesn't turn into Lombardi #2. However, if he's good with the puck (can hold onto it and dish it off with right timing; something VERY few current Flames forwards can do) he can do well playing with Iginla. That being said, he's UFA which naturally lowers his value. Plus there's always the possibility we won't be able to re-sign him.

White to me is a wildcard, how often do small offensive defender blossom in the West. If he can skate and move the puck well, he can be the bright spot of this trade.

To sum it up: 30yo guy with questionable trade value (I like him, but he could be had cheaper), UFA and a cheap wild card with inflated offense numbers.

Duncan Keith is not a huge guy, he seems to be doing alright, same with Giordano.

Duncan Keith really flew under the radar for the previous 2 years before last year, I am thinking White is gonna suprise ths e out of many of you.

White 5-10, 185
Keith 6-1, 194

I'm not going to campare them any further...

for the record, Gio is 6-0, 203 and he plays tough, way tougher than his frame would indicate. Does White?

As I said, I expect puck moving from him, and hope he doesn't get pushed around too much.
