Dion right now isn't appreciably better than Ian White.

I wouldn't go that far. The Flames got completely raped by the Leafs in the Gilmour trade. Atleast in the Phaneuf trade they got some good players back and added depth.

But I bet if the internet was around back then (or at least as much as it is now), we would have had the same people posting on CP saying that it was a great deal for the Flames.
I could see it now...
"Gilmour was a cancer and was holding out and the Flames got a 50 goal scorer for him... yay!"

Looking at this from a leafs standpoint...this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. They now have a grand total of 102 goals for on the team good enough for last by over 30 goals and 46.8 Million committed next year to just 14 players.

So who else to we have to subtract to make these extra forwards fit? Backlund and Lundmark? That makes this deal horrible.
Sutter managed to destroy the value of the only impact draft pick he has. Bad contract, bad trade. We'd have been way better off with $6.5M cap space + 4 1st rounders if anyone wanted to sign Phaneuf to an offer sheet than 4.2M + Hagman and the rights to RFA White.
Nobody liked Hagman's contract when the Leafs signed it, so I don't know why we'd like it now. We got a bunch of second liners when what we really need is a 1st liner. We're displacing guys who were finally getting the opportunity they've earned.
Uggh. Sarich for future considerations would've given us just about the same amount of cap space as this deal.

a second line UFA player Stajan. Stajan will demand more money that Sutter may not be willing to pay.
a second line RFA Dman White. White will want more money. Flames will likely resign him.
Sutter gives away
Our top young allstar Dman Phaneuf under contract for 5 more years.
a 4th line Sjostrom that has 1 more year.
a top Dman prospect.
Burke gave up nothing of his future than Hagman who Burke could not stand anyways. Flames win this deal if Sutter is lucky for 3 months.
|
Or Sutter was able to move a Cap heavy player and turn him into three players two top 6 forwards and a #3 dman.
He was also able to remove a 4th liners contract who was still on the books next season..... I also like this move (i.e. Mayers... as he is an UFA).
As for Ian White he is an RFA... there is no risk with this player
As for Stajan, he might sign or he might leave which would open space for the Flames to target a good Center in the off season

I wouldn't have been one of them. As young as I was I thought that trade was absolutely brutal.

Here's the thing, as dumb as Leafs fans are, they always say, "we should have gotten more". With this one it's simply, "how the hell did we pull that one off"? The problem with this deal is simply, it doesn't do much for us now, and it does little for us prospect wise down the road. Sure it opens up cap space, but who do you really expect to get this off-season? Kovalchuk is gonna cost too much, and after that it's a steep drop off. I'm not opposed to the dealing of Phaneuf necessarily, but get equal return for the guy. Certainly he's been not so good this year and last, but he's shown what he can do, and teams lick their chops at trying to get these type of guys. How bad does LA look now for dealing Eric Johnson for a bag of pucks? It's the same thing here, and it's absolutely irritating to hear apologists back up Sutter on one of the worst deals ever. They didn't get a top line forward, and primarily made the deal to get a little rental depth and cap space for the off-season. Dealing Dion should have been done at the deadline where some other GM would at least give up a 1st rounder and a solid player (no I obviously don't have any sources, but teams would lick their chops to get a guy like Phaneuf).
If people think Regehr is annoying with his union banter, wait until a reporter starts asking Stajan about union issues. The guy never shuts up. He bulks up like a power forward in the offseason, but gets roughed up pretty good, pretty often. He's a nice fit for the 3rd line. Hagman is a nice pickup, but not nearly consistent enough to be the ace in the deal. White like I said before is a solid 4th d-man, but coughs the puck up, will get roughed around in the Western Conference, but makes some solid passes. Mayers is a strong skater and is a good energy guy. Still not liking the deal though...and never will.

It's a very shallow pool next year for free agent centers... Marleau, Saku Koivu and Jokinen being the best ones probably... and a lot of teams will be bidding on them.
And you almost ALWAYS have to over pay for free agents. Again, this is why any trade involving Phaneuf needed to bring back a young forward with top six potential.

Some people are comparing this trade to the Gilmour-Leeman trade, which is ridiculous. Gilmour was already a superstar, and stanley cup WINNER when he was traded. Who is Dion Phaneuf? I big name that came into the league with a lot of hype, had a good rookie year and three subsequent underachieving years, a big contract and seemingly a poor relationship with his teammates.
I think a trade with San Jose for Setoguchi would be a good move for a few of Calgary's current glut of forwards. He has huge offensive potential, but is probably most useful on a 1st line. That's not happening with San Jose's current group.

Moss, Dawes and Conroy are on the IR, who knows how long they are out for.
I would bet, Backlund will be sent down tomorrow or fairly soon.
Basically 3 Forwards are in the line up and 1 leaves. If Backlund is sent down. That is 1 extra forward.

The mods desperately need to make a poll.
A: Happy with the Trade
B: Unhappy with the Trade
Or variations thereof C, D, etc.

Ohhhh man I am STOKED!! There's a LOT of things to like here aside from the excitement. Can we please get a poll already on yay or nay for the trade?!
The cap space is HUGE. It's clear we are making another deal, or should. Dion was CLEARLY an issue in the locker room and I for one am SO happy he's gone. I hated cheering for him, and this makes it even easier to hate Toronto. Good riddance.
Proof that NOBODY is above the crest on the jersey. People forget this is a TEAM game, and you can't have brutal personalities in the dressing room. I'm excited, and we will be a better team because of this deal notwithstanding Dion is completely overrated by almost everybody on this website. To me the biggest downside is the inclusion of Aulie.
Awesome day for Calgary.

The cap space we gained right now is $600k. Nothing that is really going to help us.
The cap space next year will be eaten up when we either re-sign or replace Stajan, Bourque, White (RFA) and Jokinen.... it will be used to maintain the status quo and isn't going to be magic beans.

That's assuming they sign one, they may trade for one..... Having Cap space is HUGE. There is always teams that need to shed contracts IMO
As for Phaneuf for a young forward with top 6 potential... He traded Phaneuf for 2 top 6 forwards and 1 top 4 dman.
Plus it gave the Flames cap room....

I'm not sure where everyone is seeing all this supposed cap space...?
Hagman makes 3 mil for a few more seasons...
So with just Hagman you're saving $3.5 mil.
White needs to be re-signed as an RFA and with his numbers is probobly around $2 - $3 ish mil/year...
If you re-sign Stajan who will be around $3 mil you're actually spending more than Phanuef by about $2 mil or so...
Or you are dropping 1 or 2 of these guys with marginal extra cap space...
?
Did I miss something?

I'd like to see Hagman with Jokinen - as they have apparently had chemistry in the past.
Boyd-Stajan-Iginla
Hagman-Jokinen-Lundmark
Glencross-Langkow-Nystrom
Mcgratton/Prust/Mayers
Dawes in for Lundmark when he's back
Moss in for Nystrom
Nystrom to the 4th line.
