When I got the text from TSN this morning I was furious as there was no one I wanted and still don't want from the Leafs. I'll reserve judgement as our forward ranks have obviously improved but to give up a Norris trophy finalist at such a young age and get no young building blocks back is not what I would have hoped for and I'm still upset.
Way to many forwards on the roster right now, I'm interested to see what is done next.

Im a little suspicious as to where Burke thinks scoring will come from.

You guys all talk about prospects. White and Stajan are 25 thats pretty young. Id much rather have guys who have proven they and play and be productive than prospects!
Wake up guys we are a better deeper team
I love Phaneuf but this helps us

The more i digest this, the more i think this is a BRILLANT move in THEORY.
but getting three solid players all with offensive and cap upside for Phanuef IS still at this point for where the Flames are is better than bringing in ANOTHER high profile cap eater

It's a bad trade but not as bad as most think.
Phaneuf asked for a trade. His value was at its low point. You have to think there is a bit of addition by subtraction here, both in terms of salary and also in the fact that he was malcontent and dragging the whole team down.
Yes its spare parts, but its two top-sixers, a depth guy and a No. 4 d-man who won't bring as good a skillset as Phaneuf, but not bad production. Plus with Sutters system and the personnel in place, defense was a strength so you can afford to downgrade at that position.
I wish Kaberle was included, I wish a guy like Kadri was included or a top draft pick but it shows where Dion's value was at right now. Sutter still wants to save this season and with this deal he's moved in that direction.
Kovalchuk is a very real possibility too now.

I'm shocked and really hurting inside. I was one who loved Dion and thought I would see him get a chance to develop into a stud blue liner for the Flames. We get 2 players who are UFA's next year so we don't even know if were going to keep him.
To all the haters out there, I hope your happy now. Dion will now develop into a stud defenseman on another team while were left with Ian friggin White. Oh ya, and anyone who said that Dion hated it here and wanted to be traded, just watch his press conference where he's basically about to cry. I feel your pain Dion and your gonna be missed.

Actually, in these situations, English can be your friend.
Dion is saying exactly the reverse of what you're inferring. Really as simple as that.
Had he said "Well, I knew people traded guys like Gretzky, but me...?" then you could have put those powers of intuition to more accurate use.

Yup this helps a lot...young proven pretty good (stagan and White) and a guy who can pot 30 this year 13 goals out 48 goals in...the sum of the parts and it's effect on the rest of the team >>>>>> one high profile guy and a first round pick.

I'm sure whatever team signs Stajan in July will love that fact.
And not to nitpick, but Stajan is 26.
White and Hagman are the only players we are guarenteed to have past this season.

You're kidding, right? Has that deal ever been cut in the NHL? I have a funny feeling there'd be a lot of roadblocks to overcome to accomplish a 'secret agreement' like that.

Where does that quote come from? On the radio Sutter said the opposite, that Dion was a great guy and a great player, that a trade doesn't mean the player isn't wanted, that it's the opposite, that teams want you.
So please provide the full quote and context.

Unless Dion was lying during his interview, he explicitly said he did not request a trade, and given his emotional reaction and listening to him there's no way he's lying.

Powerplay Quarterback

I will miss dion
But we got some much needed scoring depth
Ian White..
we now have 2 Giordanos
Hagman is a solid 2 way player
Stajan is a solid second liner... perhaps the center iginla needs
Mayers fights, hes a solid piece to "any" checking line

Sutter said this trade WASN'T made because of Dion.
But to trade him, it had to be a part of it. I am far, far past the stage of believing anything Sutter says.
