I have to say, I'm pretty pissed off. Pissed off that Phaneuf left, pissed off that we didn't get a 1st liner for Phaneuf, pissed off the about the underwhelming, more-of-the-same guys coming back. Not a fan of this deal at all.

Hopefully this turns Regehr now into Regehr of last year. Please.

While I see The Dion becoming a huge superstar in the years to come, I don't see it happening in Toronto. Yes, we will regret giving up on him, but it won't be to the Leafs benefit.

Oh man, what a way to start posting on this forum.

This one is going to take awhile for the aftershock to wear off, even though I've been in the anti-Phaneuf camp for awhile

Wow is it ever weird to see Phaneufs name on a Leafs jersey.

This is plain as day as Leeman for Gilmore Part Deux. If the Flames don't win the Cup in 2010 or 2011 I'm becoming a Laffs fan until Darryl Sutter is out of the GM's chair. Eff this crap.

Now lets actually break down this trade, because I don't think it is as bad as some say, heck on the calgaryflames.com message board they are comparing it to the leeman gilmour trade

To Flames
Ian White - Highly underrated, young, promising D-man. G 9 A 17 P 26 SH 130. Has been pretty consistent over the years and already has 4 years of NHL experience. Only has 8 less points than Phaneuf this year. We are so deep at D that really Phaneuf leaving isn't as huge of an impact as one might think. It is a loss though for sure.

Matt Stajan - Young, some what inconsistent forward. G 16 A 25 P 41 SH 114 Many thought he would be a 20 goal scorer at least by now, and though he probably will be there this year, it has taken quite along time for Stajan to become the offensive player many thought he would become in T.O. He is a set-up man though and could be that center Iginla has been looking for.

Nik Hagman - Mid-aged, highly skilled, but somewhat unmotivated forward. G 20 A 13 P 33 SH 148. Hagman is a strange player. He reminds of a Kovalev, but only the unmotivated, lazy Kovalev all the time. He never really broke out in the NHL as an offensive dynamo, accept when he got 27 goals in Dallas. I could see him becoming Huselius version 2 playing with the likes of an Iginla or Bourque, or even his fellow country man Jokinen.

Jamal Mayers - Older, one-dimensional, forward. G 2 A 6 P 8 SH 47. Simply a tact on player, could easily be seen as a straight across trade for Sjostrom. Definitely not an impact player what so ever.

To Leafs:
Dion Phaneuf - Young, multi-skilled, but somewhat inconsistent franchise D-man. G 10 A 12 P 32 A 138. Phaneuf is an amazing player. He can hit with some of the best in the league, has a lethal shot, and possesses the potential to become an all-round d-man. But he just has not been great the last 2 years, which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed what Phaneuf showed he could bring on most nights. I am happy he got a goal in his final game as a Flame and I truly believe he will wreck the east.

Fredrick Sjostrom - Youngish, one-dimensional forward. G 1 A 5 P 6 SH 33. See Jamal Mayers write up. Also, it's kinda fitting that his one goal as a Flame is probably one of the nicest of the year for the Flames

Kieth Aulie - Young, promising Propect D-man. G 7 A 27 P 33 with the Brandon Wheat Kings this year. The 6 foot 6 D-man seems to be doing well in the minors and has experienced time with the World Juniours in his young hockey career. Look for him to be an eventual starter in the NHL in the coming years.

I think it is a pretty even trade. It helps Calgary now, and it helps T.O. for the future. Time will tell if this trade pays off though as a guy like Phaneuf most likely has his best years ahead of him at 24 years of age.
This summarizes my thoughts on the deal pretty well. Time will only tell how well this benefits the Flames in the short term. I'm glad we got White anyway.

The Flames are a better team today because of this move. Plain and simple.

We got depth, some speed, some financial flexibility, some scoring and moved a player who was maybe a problem in the locker room (as has been reported by everyone and their mother).

I think White is an underrated player and he has been the Leafs best dman all year.

Dion has 22 pts and is plus 3.
White has 26 pts and is plus 1 while playing for the worst team in the NHL.

A few thoughts, now that I've stopped swearing... Leaf players are always overrated because all Canadian media plays to the Toronto market... We've got way too many losers around here - look at the fataing Leafs, Coyotes, and Panthers we have kicking around - when half your roster is used to being pushed around, guess what happens... Phaneuf had to have been some kind of a major asshat off the ice for this to happen... I would have rather just traded Phaneuf for 2 months of Kovalchuk... Getting owned by that self-important turd (Burke) makes it even more painful...

For me the verdict is still ouyt on the trade, but I will say this...

I accidentally taped the HNIC replay of the Canucks/Leafs game. So I started watching it today after hearing of the trade, and I have to say I'm excited to see what these players can do.

Stajan set up Kessel twice for two goals in the first few minutes. Both times he was very calm with the puck down low and and stayed composed until Kessel was open. I would like to see him start with Iginla, he seems like he could compliment him very nicely.

Ian White looked pretty good on the powerplay, he moves the puck really quickly and isn't afraid to pinch in at the right time.

Haven't seen this yet, but I was watching "The Reporters" earlier and Steve Simmons I think it was said, Phaneuf was referred to as 2/20. He had been in the league for 2 years, but acted like he had been in it for 20 years.

Man Burke just continues to make good moves for the leafs IMO. The way I look at this one is Hagman and White for Phaneuf as Stajan and Mayers are UFA. I really know nothing about White and thought he sucked, but from Leaf and Flames fans comments he seems better than I thought, hopefully he slots in nicely with Regher.

When I got the text from TSN this morning I was furious as there was no one I wanted and still don't want from the Leafs. I'll reserve judgement as our forward ranks have obviously improved but to give up a Norris trophy finalist at such a young age and get no young building blocks back is not what I would have hoped for and I'm still upset.

Way to many forwards on the roster right now, I'm interested to see what is done next.

Dion looked pretty sad to leave Calgary but his only lines he said in the interview were

'I was shocked'
'Like I said'
'I'm very excited to play in Toronto'

The only change up was 'If Wayne Gretzky can get traded, anyone can'

then he goes back to 'Like I said', 'I'm very excited...' (without looking very excited)

I still can't believe we couldn't get a player or prospect with 1st line potential back for Phaneuf. Absolutely brutal.

Maybe it is a good trade "now" for the Flames, but this is still not a team that is likely to contend for the Cup "now". When Stajan and Mayers leave as UFAs in July, being a good trade in February is meaningless. The Flames need to be looking at the future. You don't trade to set up 8th/9th place teams for the "now".

The best player we got back is a 30 year old 20/20 2nd liner...

Just watched that myself. While Sutter did say he is not trading #3 I found it amusing that Dion would compare this to Wayne. No massive ego present at all.
