Let's here what Darryl Sutter has to say before we jump on Phaneuf's side.

What's he supposed to say? He denied it before.
Let's see what D. Sutter has to say.

I must say I'm pretty choked Dion got run out of town like this...
Even though he's traded to the hated Leafs, I'll stick to what I said before when defending Phaneuf. I hope he wins multiple Norris trophies in the next few years and sticks it to everyone who doubted him.

Yeah the emotion is pretty clear in his voice, especially the "going to a TEAM THAT WANTS ME". That just kills me. I'm crushed right now, absolutely crushed.

Don't like the trade for not getting a true #1 guy back. And will eat crow for saying Phaneuf wasn't to be traded, although if he asked for a trade Sutter had no choice no matter what.
That said:
Like White more that I see more stats.
Hagman is the skilled LW needed.
Mayers and Stajan are two throw in forwards that are decent and will add depth and mean underperformers will now sit on popcorn row and not be granted spots...and both likely gone July 1.
Also, for those who bitch about wanting to win right now then complaining when times are tough about bad drafting/thus poor foresight by Sutter, this move removes $24m over the next 4 years + $2m or so of this year that was earmarked for Phaneuf.
So, the real, final return for Phanuef will be in what happens with the money that was meant to go to Phanuef, either through trade this year, or what happens this years UFA season (or even next years). That's the unknown factor that's hard to think about right now, because more or less we all knew what we had in Phanuef and the demonstrated potential he's had, and shown, and his age.
But before we throw Sutter under the bus lets see what he does with the $24m budgeted for Phanuef.

People, Phaneuf didn't get "run out of town." Come ON. You honestly think Sutter would trade him because of a few fans booing?

On CDC, this is what I posted
Quote:
Calgary would probably be better off trading a big piece for 2 or 3 smaller pieces, it would really help the team depth. Something like Phaneuf and Moss for Ian White, Hagman and Stajan. In that trade you don't get a star player, but you get a Top 4 D (I think White is very underrated), a top 6 Winger and a 2nd Line Center. I know those players are Leafs and thus have a poor rep as talented players, but I think they're all solid player
|
It's my fault guys, Sutter saw my post, changed a few things and pulled the trigger.

I personally like the trade lots of people defending phaneuf but he's a minus player.
Yes he scores and gets points, but he's really predictable on the powerplay, just get in the shooting lane.
Gio's role has been expanding all year and I believe this will clear up some room at the end of the year for us to give him the deal he deserves

We have 17 forwards on the roster right now...
Even if Backlund gets sent back down, what happens when Conroy, Dawes, and Moss come back from injury?

This is the worst trade Sutter has ever made and the best Burke has ever done. I'm absolutely shocked Sutter did this and it pisses me off to no end. I was not on the fire Sutter wagon until this deal came through, and I'm not even willing to see how it plays out...just fire him now. Hagman is probably the best player in the deal IMO. Stajan is a good third liner, White is a good 4th d-man, Mayers is a solid worker for the bottom two lines, but Phaneuf is simply having a bad year and we've seen what he can do. Why deal the guy now? And not gaining any top end youth for the future is really the upsetting part. If anything, Sutter should have insisted on Kaberle being sent the other way as a rental, but he gets a bag of pucks. I'm so pissed. Fack man, I don't know what to think. I'm losing my head.

How is Matt Stajan a throw in? He is on pace for 60 points, bad team or not, that's still considered decent.

Although still undecided about what to think of this trade, I don't like the idea of trading away a big piece of the future while getting nothing for the future back just to squeak into the playoffs and get bounced by San Jose or Chicago in round 1 again.
I don't like it if that's just the reasoning behind it. I'd rather miss the playoffs.
There must have been something serious going on in the locker room. There had to be, especially with Brent Sutter here, having groomed Phaneuf in junior.

At least we're getting a nice mustache back in return.
I still can't decide how I feel about this. Maybe nobody wanted Phaneuf...I dunno yet. It's gonna take a bit to see who truly wins this.

This is absolutely DISGUSTING. The more I think about the trade the more I want to throw up.
