Definitely not huge on the 2 UFAs part of it, all depends on what Sutter does with it from here. I don't mind Aulie being moved out, I don't think he will amount to much in the end. Sjostrom too really. Ian White will definitely be a piece to be signed (or promptly moved perhaps?) Strange for sure.

The funny thing is that there's plenty of posters talking as if White is a throw-in when he's clearly who the deal was built around for the Flames.
He'll instantly take over Phaneuf's spot in the top 4. He's already playing 24 minutes/night, is the only plus defenseman on an awful defensive hockey team, yet still has 9 goals and 26 points (more than Phaneuf).
White might not have the ceiling Phaneuf has, but he's playing at Phaneuf's level right now (and last season) and could easily be a #2 guy in his prime years.
It might not be the best return for Phaneuf, but it clearly seems as if the locker room rumors were true and if so you can't expect a full return for a locker room cancer (or whatever you want to call it) who's earning $6.5mil and isn't earning that contract, regardless of what his potential might be.

You're not alone, I'm not very happy right now. Dion's been one of my favorite's for years and his was the first name I ever put on the back of my jerseys. I'm now awaiting our first game against the new Leafs team.

Phaneuf is overrated and not that good of a defenseman. And that will come to the forefront on a swiss cheese roster.
Rich man's Gauthier.

Not so sure he'll be able to successfully address his issues in Trauma.

Stajan is the key.... can the flames sign him?
Now the flames have room to sign Rene Bourque and maybe Jokinen a

I will echo the general sentiment in my surprise in the lack of a big name coming back in the deal....Phaneuf may be having a bad year but I really thought they would go for more of a 1-for-1 trade for a big(ger) name offensive guy. Hagman is really the only decent piece imo. White was probably just thrown into the deal after the Sedins made him look silly over and over last night....please, Brent, play this guy vs the twins.

Well settling down.
I like White and Hagman.
Don't like Stajan and Mayers being UFAs.
Wondering why we got 3 roster forwards? Backlund is down, but what happens to Lundmark, Moss, Dawes.
Phaneuf going is a huge disapointment, Aulie leaving is a disapointment but not a huge deal because we have other goods dmen prospects.
We'll see how things shake down. Boy am I glad we still have Gio and Bouwmeester.

We need to enshrine the threads about trading Dion so we can remember those who were adamant (sometimes to the point of overbearing) that Sutter would never trade Phaneuf.

If we needed salary room, why not dump Sarich. Absolutely horrible puck skills and immobile.
I can't believe we also gave up Aulie as well. I guess I will have to wait until the dust clears, but I do not like this move at all.

Can't say. I knew a deal was happening today, but didn't know about this one. The other one is still in the works I assume.

Paying organized sports being a prerequisite to having an opinion? Wow.
I have played lots of organized sports in my life (glad to have met your entry requirements), and I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. These things can't be accurately judged in the hour, day, or week following. There's more to come. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or maybe at the deadline.

I don’t mind this trade at all. As soon as Dion signed for $6.5 he became expendable and replaceable (if you get the cap space back). That’s the way it works now in a salary cap world. You have to at least live up to your contract, if not then you are hindering your team. And Dion this year was no way playing close to $6.5 million d-man. If Dion was still on his rookie deal, then this is a bad deal, but not now since we are already paying for his potential no harm in moving him.
Flames are better now for this year and can be better in the years to come (if they use their new cap space wisely). We finally have the scoring depth that we have all asked for and not really lost anything on the defensive side. We also now have money for this summer to improve where Sutter sees fit.
