I have a 13 year old daughter who wants her own email address. I don't see any reason why she shouldn't have one, but I am skeptical of some providers due to what I have seen come into my own inbox. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe there is a provider out there that specializes in email accounts for kids?

I've never had objectionable or offensive spam sent to my GMAIL account. Nothing unsolicited at all.

I don't see anything wrong with Hotmail, just make sure she doesn't let her e-mail get out there, by signing up for certain things, posting it on message boards (Google Spiders) or other things like that. Hotmail will work perfectly fine for her with little or no spam trouble, as long as you be sure to keep it "friends-only". There are also spam filters on Hotmail you can mess around with. This would also work well because being 13 she will likely want to talk on MSN a lot, having a Hotmail account means no signing up for passport accounts and other complicated (for her) things.

Yahoo isn't a good choice in my opinion. It's troublesome, and everytime I've had it, it's allowed a lot of erm, interesting... Spam through and into my Inbox.

Gmail could work. It offers the best protection in my opinion and of course has a massive inbox. You can also set up some good spam filters on there too. Only problem is, it could get a little complicated for her, not sure. You'd have to sign up her gmail address for Microsoft Passport to allow her to chat on MSN Messenger.

If you want to try gmail I'd be happy to send you an invite, just PM me your e-mail and you can set that up for her.

gmail has been great with avoiding any spiders from stealing the address and spamming it to hell.

also you might want to see what options you have with your ISP

Let her have 2 emails, one for things you need to put an email address on to sign up. That one gets the spam. The other one for friends should get no spam if it is kept to just family and friends.

That's the one.

All you need is another email adress for someone to send you an invite.

Yes, to be honest, I have a hotmail account that I set up, but use rarely, making sure I sign in right away.
I don't use it to sign up for any free registration sites, (even CP) and use it mainly to send some messages from, to indivuduals.
Been over a year, and the only mail I get from non responses to the messages I send are from hotmail themselves.

Also, when registering, make sure you don't sign up for any hotmail-provded content too.

Had to take a double take when reading the title of this thread too.....

Yeah exactly, Hotmail would be the best bet, as it would be easiest for her and allow her to use MSN Messenger to chat with her friends without signing up for Microsoft Passport also. Just be sure she keeps her e-mail limited to her friends, family and herself. Posting it on the Internet, giving it to those little online quizzes and games (things young teenagers tend to do online, I notice) and other things like that is just begging for spam. Signing up for places like CP (for example) rarely if ever results in spam being sent to your registered e-mail, just be sure if she is going to play around on a place similar to this, that she does not post her e-mail anywhere in her profile or signature (especially the sig).

Basically just tell her to be careful with it and Hotmail would be great.

Signed her up for hotmail. Also have her password and username, surpisingly with no reservations from her whatsoever.

She's such a good kid.

Or so you think! :P Daughters can be a father's worst nightmare, I feel sorry for my brother. Just wait 'til those guys come knocking on the door and calling. Better invest in a shotgun now.
