Nobody paid $15 to see Titanic. Come back when its #1 when the figures have been adjusted for inflation.
Lame. As I've previously mentioned in this thread, although I think it's neat to see things adjusted for inflation, I don't think it's a fair comparison.
There are far far far more entertainment options now. Titanic didn't have to compete with reasonably high quality downloads, video games (in the same way they are now) 800 channels, HD, Blu-ray and the like.

yep, and as previously stated. Gone With The Wind is all time number one based on ticket sales...but there was nothing to do on a friday night other than to go to the movies.
either way, 26th alltime is still impressive for a move that no one likes, unoriginal, horrible, waste of time, crap movie...that everyone seems to be talking about.

I haven't gone through the whole thread, but judging by the last few posts I can guess how it went.
I saw it twice. Is it a great story? Nope. But it is a good story, and the way it was told was well done and the movie medium was breathtaking. I doubt it will break the top 10 on this list; for all the reasons people have mentioned and the fact that it just isn't as good of a film. But top 25 in all time attendance (which it will be shortly) is nothing to disparage.

After $300 million dollars, years spent developing the Na'vi world, culture, and language (which sounded pretty cool and convincing), years more spent immaculately art-directing the film, and then when it comes to picking a font for the subtitles, they spent five minutes to identify the most ethnicky-looking one that comes pre-installed on their computer? Nobody who's not a graphic designer is going to care about it, but it ranks only a little behind comic sans as the most mocked font out there.

After $300 million dollars, years spent developing the Na'vi world, culture, and language (which sounded pretty cool and convincing), years more spent immaculately art-directing the film, and then when it comes to picking a font for the subtitles, they spent five minutes to identify the most ethnicky-looking one that comes pre-installed on their computer? Nobody who's not a graphic designer is going to care about it, but it ranks only a little behind comic sans as the most mocked font out there.

Because then someone would complain and want to see the numbers adjusted based on the population of the world being much larger now and then they can feel justified in their view of not liking the movie and somehow the comparison of box office statistics will back them up and prove some point unknown to anyone.

Yeah, the Papyrus font really annoyed me because it stuck out like a sore thumb. #1 most overused font of the 2000s.
Next up, Avatar will continue its pursuit of Titanic's Domestic box office record of $600 million.
To those talking in terms of tickets, I have actually heard that if you compare their runs, Avatar has sold more tickets by this point in its run than Titanic had in its. If that continues Avatar (once it leaves the theaters.... some day) MAY not only be in the top 10 but possibly the top 5 for ticket sales.
That said the realities of the movie business ARE different now and Avatar's run in theaters may not be as long as Titanic's.
If I had to guess I would say that Avatar will end up in the top 15 for sure... anything else is gravy.
