Red can think what he wants. Obviously he's not a Conan fan. Fair enough.

I watch that clip and I see a comedian having fun. Interacting with the audience. Defying convention. Sure he could come out and shake everyone's hands in the front row. How's that comedic? How's that entertaining?

Conan loves what he does and it clearly shows in his work. He's creative. Original. Unabashed. What you serve as evidence for juvenile, unintellectual comedy, I watch and recount the innumerable ways Conan left us entertained every night. Even when the material wasn't top grade, he found a way to keep me smiling.

That's why (and deservedly so I might add) he's developed a cult like following. But evidently it's not enjoyed by everyone. Fair enough. Enjoy watching Leno. Seriously.

I read a link posted on I'm With COCO facebook page, basically it stated a few things:

Leno relies on making fun of others, to make him look more intelligent (Jaywalking, etc) while Conan would rather be self-deprecating and look like the dumb one, even though he's probably the most intelligent person in any room he's in, much less on network television. Not saying that Conan doesn't make fun of others (celebrity survey anyone?), but Leno can't be funny on his own merits.

Goes back to the root of this problem, the affiliates complaining about a poor lead-in for their news, which wasn't the case with Carson. Why is everyone ignoring the actual problem here? What is NBC gonna do then you ask? They're going to start putting scripted dramas at 10 pm and hopefully find something that does well so they can sell some ads. They don't care as much about late night as some people think.

What NBC is looking at right now is shows like CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, The Good Wife, and The Mentalist... coincidentally all CBS offerings but they're shows that are pulling decent 18-49 numbers at 10 pm and that is what matters to broadcast networks because they sell ads to make money.

Let's be real here: For people to make out Conan as some sort of self-deprecating humble dude is silly. It's not even right, so what's the point?

I find all this support for Conan after his Tonight Show tanked to be misguided. Why weren't these people watching the show in the first place?

Because people are sheep and can't handle change. Much the same way they couldn't handle the change from Carson to Leno in 1992. NBC was just quicker to hit the panic button this time around.

I was only 9 years old when the whole Carson/Leno/Letterman debacle happened so I don't know alot about the whole situation. This week I kept hearing about the HBO Movie "Late Shift" so I got a copy of it and sat down and watched it last night. Its was very interesting to see how NBC had handled things 20 years ago, and really never seemed to learn there lesson. For anyone who is a late night fan, I recommend on sitting down and watching it if possible.

Great last episode. Back to watching Lettermen at 11 30, until the fall at least. Conan is a great entertainer, and it will undoubtedly come back to bite NBC in the ass.

Alright, my last post in this thead. It's obviously turned into a Jay vs Conan supporters thread and everyone is bunkered down in their trenches.

There are a few things I would consider facts (IMHO):

  • NBC did a horribile job handling this entire situation.
  • Everyone knows Leno has more fans than Conan. Conan was pretty much guaranteed to have lower ratings.
  • Keeping Jay around at 10 means his fans would have little reason to stay up and watch the Tonight show.
  • Having the Tonight Show did change Conan's comedy. It was less edgy for it to be more accessable to a larger audience at the earlier time slot.
  • Yes ratings are the only factor when you run a business. Do what you need to do to keep improving them.
  • But sometimes you have to stand up for someone that gets screwed over in the process. If all it does is make NBC smarten up for the next time this happens, then it's a good thing right? Jimmy has crap ratings, but I'm guessing they will handle that situation a little better now. Business is Business, but so is PR.

Perhpas NBC didn't have the ability financially to be patient with Conan taking over for Jay. I wonder what their financial position was like when Jay took over for Johnny.

More than just Fox trying to woo Conan.

Conan going to USA (and back to NBC-Universal) would be interesting. One advantage they have is a nice big studio that was recently built to hold a late night talk show sitting empty on the Universal Studios lot.

I would think the top of his list would be FOX because it is a broadcast network and would mean more money and a higher profile. The premium cable networks (HBO, Showtime) would be interesting because they could push the envelope a lot more and would be less reliant on ratings.
