Conan's speech was touching. I hope he gets a new show soon, even though he has to wait seven months.
Yeah it was a 40 of Big Bear or something similar.
I've never been a big late night tv watcher, but I made a point of watching that last episode of Conan...and if they're all half as good as that, maybe it's worth watching a little more closely.

Man, that ending really personified the type of guy Conan is. I don't know many hosts who could get Beck, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons, and Elvis Costello to come on and jam with him. Neil Young made the point as well, Conan has done a lot for new music over the years. It's quite obvious he has 100x the respect that Jay Leno will ever have across many spectrums of the entertainment industry.

This all transpired because NBC was greedy. They tried to keep Conan from defecting in '04 by promising him the Tonight Show in '09; they tried to save money and keep Leno from defecting in '09 by shifting Leno to 10; and when the new configuration wasn't successful, in no small part because Leno at 10 was the biggest bust of all and pissed off the affiliates, they tried to keep everyone by cramming them all into late night.
Always been a Conan fan. Always will be a Conan fan. He's a true inspiration.
I liked the "To Be Continued" addition to the end of his highlight package. I really hope that's not the last we'll see of Conan with a late night talk show. And his speech was extremely heartfelt, sincere, and classy. I've never seen Conan close to getting emotional before but you could briefly see him choking back tears as he thanked all his fans.

He handed off the #1 rated Late Night show to Conan like he promised in 2009. NBC threw a boat load of money at Leno to stay with NBC so he wouldn't go to Fox, ABC, or CNN. Since they knew his viewership would more than likely follow him to a different network in the same timeslot.
Seven months passes and both shows are not doing near as well as expected, and NBC is losing viewers to its rivals. Sure they could wait it out, but why risk it when you still have the biggest draw in their lineup.
So the only cure NBC has it to put Leno back in his own time slot to save hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. What jerks, wanting to make a show profitable, and keep viewers watching. Moving Conan onto the Tonight Show was an unmitigated diasaster. It's not like NBC had any other choice, as I am sure they knew how bad this would look.
I get that Conan is some sort of cult figure to the younger generation, but he was never going to cut it on the Tonight Show. I am sure he will surface in September again in some capacity however.

At the end of the day, Conan took the Tonight Show's rating lead and squandered it in a matter of months. Bandwagoners fail to mention this before throwing pointless shots at NBC.
trackercowe, it's the affiliates that wanted Leno out of primetime because he was giving them a poor lead-in for their 11 o'clock news (which is where affiliates make their money, through ad revenue), but the general sentiment is that NBC has no dramas for 10 that would do better than Leno anyway. Yet another misconception about this whole thing - that NBC just randomly decided to beat up Conan. Truth is, NBC has no choice but to give a damn about its affiliates.
In the future I bet NBC becomes a cable network, or turns over 10 o'clock to local programming like FOX and the CW. Conan needs to go to HBO or Showtime or something, just get out of broadcast TV. I don't think people are considering what will happen after about 2 months on FOX.

Yah, NBC has really fallen off the map. I remember when they were the biggest network in television during the Seinfeld and Friends era. Now I can't think of one show worth watching on the entire network aside from The Office, and the ocassional episode of 30 Rock.
I just wonder after all these years will Conan be willing to really racy humor that the audience demands on Showtime or HBO. Sure Conan could easily write for that type of audience, but there is a huge difference in what he has done for the past 15+ years to what you see on cable television.

the same could be said about Leno when he took over from Carson, but NBC showed him a patience they didn't with Conan. the real kicker is going to be in a few weeks when Leno is back on the Tonight Show and the ratings still stink, what is NBC gonna do then?

Yes, I know that people have cable and satellite, but a lot of people (old people, poor people, college kids in dorms) still only watch broadcast only.
Anyways, just a theory to what might have contributed to the lost of ratings.

Well, I'd say in the US, a majority of people are still on broadcast because they get so many networks over the air anyway. For them to be too lazy to get HD (even if you can get compensated for the converter), that would mean they give up on TV entirely.
Ratings are determined by a small sample of boxes placed randomly into 1% of homes in the US and that is extrapolated to the entire population. I don't know how accurate that was with all the switcheroo.
What's probably happened is that the older crowd who watched Leno tuned out and the younger crowd just doesn't register as well with the old ratings methods anyway because they have so much choice of media and many pf them download, PVR, or stream Conan anyway which don't get picked up by ratings boxes.'
I watched a lot of Conan from 1994-2000. That was Junior High/Highschool era where the internet was crappy as well. After that point, I can say I hardly watched a complete episode of Late Night and I have never ever watched a single complete episode of the Tonight Show with Conan in one sitting in front of my TV...Not even the last episode. I only watched the last half and I will download the rest later. I only download Conan or watch clips and have done that for the past 10 years.
Last nights show of Late Night with Conan O'Brien was the most fun I have ever had watching television.
I admit, I got emotional last night during the highlight reel, Conan's speech, and the amazing version of Freebird at the end.
I really hope that Conan giving props to CBS is a bit of foreshadowing. I loved Letterman in his day but he's wearing out on me a bit. I'd love to see Conan go back to NYC and take over from Dave, that would be a tremendous fit if you ask me. Fallon and the Roots are improving all the time and if Leno can stick it out for a few more years, maybe Jimmy will be ready to take the torch from Jay for good.

I hope he ends up on cbs as well. I think Conan's show works everywhere except NBC's tonight show.
I understand everyone's viewpoint, the network, Leno and Conan, however Conan's style doens't work on the tonight show. I'm sure he'll come back, either on CBS, or FX (on his way to FOX while they sort out how to shoehorn him into 10pm on FOX) and becomes the king of this format. After his speech last night absolutely everyone will be behind him.

Elvis Costello? I saw the other guys you mentioned, but I missed him. The Neil Young performance was amazing. And I agree that Conan always had the best music on his show.
