Litter
I was parking at a Shoppers Drugmart and the empty stall next to me had a pile of McDonalds garbage. It looked like someone had breakfast and simply threw all the trash onto the ground. I hate when people litter, and it is a sign of complete disrespect to basically everything. I stared at the trash and imagined what I would do had I saw the event take place when I noticed the receipt in the pile. The loser paid with interact.
Is there anything I can do to track the offender based on the details of the receipt? How can I pursue this?
I did collect and properly throw out several of the items that were on the ground.

See, now this is the kind of vigilante craziness I just love.
I have no idea how you can do anything with that receipt, but I hope you find a way. Any plans yet on what you'd do if you ID this chump?

If you take the debit receipt to the McDonald's and give them a bag of empties as incentive, they will track the offender down for you.

There is no way that you are going to track down this person based on their Interac bank account number. If this were a murder investigation, the POLICE would be able to track the person down, but last I checked the penalties for these two crimes varied in severity.
I think you need to let this go...
OR
Get yourself one of these:
- Interview people in the area to see if there were any witnesses to the crime
- Brush down the receipts for fingerprints and run them through AFIS
- Get saliva off the straw and run the DNA against CODIS
- Check for nearby tire tracks to get a make/model of the getaway car
- Search the neighborhood for any security cameras (and ZOOM IN and ENHANCE!!!)
Once you have gathered your evidence, present to the nearest police department and I'm sure they will make an arrest based on your findings.

I know you're after some justice, but the only thing you're likely gonna get is a Thank-You for picking up the trash. (Thank-You)
Littering annoys the heck out of me as well, but at least it isn't like pre-1990's anymore. I remember when it was commonplace and 100% acceptable to just throw your trash wherever you wanted (out the car window, someone's front yard, the street, etc).

I watched an angry old guy throw a bunch of garbage from KFC right back into a car full of teens that had just chucked it out the window.

Did this in Banff once to a very surprised car full of foreign tourists. They just rolled up to a red light and proceeded to discard all the garbage in their car.

Litter is just superficial.
There are much more useful endeavours that can be found if you want to 'save the world'. IMO busting someone for littering is right up there with busting someone for shoplifting for eating a grape at a grocery store. Litter from over packaging is just a symptom of a much greater problem. Over packaging is a huge waste of energy and resources. And it also pisses people off because it creates litter and looks bad.
If you are of the opinion that it looks bad and care enough, then once again, IMHO you have just as much right to pick it up as a person does to put it down.
It might make me look hypocritical, but I will get really pissed if I see someone pouring used oil down the storm drain.

I'm pretty sure people cause litter. I've personally never seen a situation where littering was the only alternative. If something is over-packaged there's no reason it can't get to a garbage can or recycling bin.

Unless you are in Japan where there are ZERO garbage cans in the whole country, yet there is no litter.

This is true, and all I am saying is that littering is not a big deal to me in the grand scheme of things. If it ends up on the street or in a landfill it is still a waste of resources and energy. All im saying is that if people want to get worked up about littering, IMO it would be more useful to find a solution to the cause of the problem, rather then wasting time imposing their superficial views. I think it is better to look for a preventative solution then a reactionary one. You dont have to try an convince me that litter looks bad on the street if it never gets a chance to make it to the street.

I was at KFC just the other day and there was a drunk "first nations" man standing just outside the entrance munching some chicken...
As I ordered drive-thru, I saw him just throw the emtpy boxes on the ground and start to walk away. I will not repeat what I said to him.........but the drive-thru girl thought I was talking to her!.....whoops.

What kind of packaging are you proposing that could never make it to the street? If you go to KFC, do you want them to just hand you chicken wings and spray soda in your face? Otherwise, packaging can turn into litter, which is disgusting. I agree with your point that excessive packaging is a problem, but that doesn't change the fact that littering is a problem too.

But the cause of the problem - littering - is people throwing their garbage on the street.
Overpackaging does not cause litter.
