I can't wait to start getting back into these contest threads. It's been crazy busy with work but i have a new investment: Nikon's D3s!!! Finally got a great camera and invested in some good glass (24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8). Didn't have enough for the trifecta for the 14-24 2.8. Will be in for contest 27, for sure.

Well, when I got to school, I was with a D80, a kit 18-70 and a 50mm 1.8... and haven't upgraded since. I just got out of school in March. I also have a Canon D30 with a 200-400 at work to use too. So I'm really going pretty far ends of the spectrum. 
I'm shooting my first ever Flames game on Feb. 3 vs the Hurricanes so I'm excited that the new cam will be in my hands before then.

Hmm, I don't even own a dslr yet. I plan on finally getting one this summer though.

I always feel I do fairly well considering that I don't use a dslr, but I also often think that I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because of it.

I wouldn't say that. The greatest lens you'll ever own in your eye; with a good eye, you'll take good pictures, and I like your photos so I'd say you have that. A good camera (and especially lens) will just better help you make the scene look the way you've already seen it, but its by no means a prerequisite to taking a good photo. That said, you're obviously a talented enough to photographer to benefit from an slr.
