Best Bang for Buck on Furniture
I've started bugging the CP faithful with the best places to own a condo in Calgary here: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=85277
Next thing would be to furnish this place from scratch. Everything from dishes to linens to TV.
Those seem to be pretty standard, but where are the best places to find both bedroom and living room furniture? I'm leaning towards a sectional and a wall unit to host the TV and miscellaneous stuff.
So which places have the best bang for buck on furniture?

Ikea is your best bet for "bang for buck". However I wouldn't get everything there as your place will quickly look like everything is from Ikea. Mix it up a bit too. Winners can have great deals on some stuff as well, but not large furniture.

Craigslist. Seriously. My wife has found some great deals on quality stuff via Craigslist. All I have to do at that point is go pick it up. We've had maybe one time where we drove out to check out the stuff and it was crap. Otherwise it's generally been stuff that is well taken care of and in good condition.

If you really want "bang for the buck", get some couches and old tvs off of the street before the garbage guys haul them away.
Seriously though: IKEA.

I recommend Leather Express, don't know if they are still there on Blackfoot but the warehouse had lots of quality livingroom furniture for half decent prices. Yeah IKEA is cheaper but it also looks cheaper too.

HomeSense carries a lot of housewares that used to be in Winners- it's like a spinoff store. They have everything from rugs to tables to lamps to dishes and cooking implements and stuff to hang on your walls. I've never seen many LARGE furniture pieces (beds, couches, etc), but to be honest I've never really looked for them because I have all that stuff already.
You can also find some good deals on housewares at Home Outfitters (the Bay spinoff store)- for the random stuff like a laundry basket or hangers or bedding. No big furniture, though.

For higher quality stuff, the Consignment gallery is a good place to go for good items at a cheaper price.

Ashley furniture and Home Furniture is pretty good for "best bang for the buck".

If you are looking at buying new appliances... higher end items check out DirectBuy. The membership to join is insanely high but if you are looking to buy a lot of items you will probably save on the long term.

Everything I've heard says DirectBuy is almost never a winning proposition.
Superstore/Walmart have lots of little things relatively cheap, and of course there are always good bargains to be had second hand if you're willing to hunt for them.
If you don't know about RedFlagDeals, I suggest taking a look at them. If you can find online stores with Canadian shipping, that can sometimes be worth looking at too. I got my futon frame (living room couch + guest bed) and my coffee table online just because I had a pretty good idea what I wanted for them and there was nothing in stores here that I really liked.

I like some of the stuff at EQ3. It comes across as a bit more expensive than IKEA, and defintiely more expensive than Wal-Mart, but we've had some pieces for several years and they are holding up nicely. It's also a Canadian company, and they have some nice designs. I would say it's great bang for buck, as long as you like modern furniture and can spend more than absoplute bargain basement prices.
In total we have a couch (sofa bed), two armchairs, a couple of clocks, a chaise lounge and a couple of other small items from them. Right now we're waiting for February when their new lines come out because we're looking for a sideboard and will likely pay about 1/3 the price for something similar we could get at Bondar's or Home Evolution. It's not going to be made with quite the same level of materials, but based on past purchases, I have no qualms about buying stuff at EQ3, everything we've bought has been decent.

Agreed, but isn't it the other way around. Winners carries homesense stuff?
Here is Vancouver, some of the Winners locations are Winners/Homesense and basically have a ton of clearance items from the normal Homesense. Definatly big bang for your buck and nice stuff too.

FCAV I'm in the market for a new couch for my new condo too so we're in the same boat. I was thinking the Brick... cause IKEA doesn't make nice sectionals or recliner leather couches.
Also I decided to not buy used ala Craigslist or kijiji because I'm allergic to cats. So that's totally out of the question.

There may be overlap in some stores, but Homesense was a Winners spinoff, to compete with Home Outfitters (the Bay).
