Haiti was a mess even before the recent earthquakes. But I'm sure you assumed it was a sweet vacation spot like the other nation that shares Hispaniola with Haiti. And of the record The Dominican Republic isn't without its issues either.

I am aware of the corruption, crime, drugs etc. in Haiti. It has been a nasty place for a long time...

Canada sent our disaster recovery team which includes some pretty advanced water purification tech so I would assume that we are already helping with getting people clean water.

I support the Alberta Government decision not to donate.
1) International diplomacy, aid, food programs, Military involvement are the responsibility of the Federal government. Therefore any government sponsered aid should becoming from the federal level
2) This is not the governments money that it is spending. It is each individual persons money sent to the government to spend on our behalf. Therefore wherever possible citizens should be directing where the dollars go especially when it is outside the general scope of the governments responsibilities.
3) The Alberta government indirectly subsidizes every persons individual donation when it comes to income tax. You will get (i Think) 10% of your donation money back.
4) The federal government (again out tax dollars) has already agreed to match any donations made by canadians on top of giving you a tax deduction (I believe 15%).
In summary, the alberta government should not be driving tax dollars going towards aid individual citizens should be driving the tax dollars toward aid. Right now this is already occuring. For ever 1$ you donate the various levels of government will donate $1.25 of your tax dollars toward relief.
To me that is a good use of our tax dollars because it is driven by individual donations and not by Public Relations. In fact I commend Stelmach for not trying to look good in the media with our tax dollars.

Surprising that Quebec is cheapening out since most Haitian born Canadians live there.

I have no problem with it. Alberta is part of the country of Canada, we pay Federal taxes and the Federal goverment should be dolling out stuff like this, not individual provinces/states/cities etc unless you have a direct connection to the area.
Tsunami was different as that was a marketing decision as well as alot Albertans having relatives there. I would be surprised if there were more than 10000 people in Alberta who were directly affected by this in a meaningful way.

It's hard to imagine that Alberta couldn't even match Manitoba.
From the non-altruistic perspective, giving aid is also great advertisement. If Alberta sends aid, people in power will remember and it will make it easier to do business there in the future. All the aid money that Canada and the U.S. gives to poorer counties isn't just to help them out.

To me this is more of a Federal thing. So while honest Ed is a bonehead on pretty much everything, not donating money to the cause isn't a big deal.

At least private donations are pouring in. There are reports that Canadians have actually been crashing web servers of relief agencies because of the volume of donations.

I never liked Stelmach.
I think the government of Alberta should donate something to Haiti.... This is a very unusual circumstance where are thousands who desparately need our help. I, personally, have already donated to the cause.
I think when the next election rolls around I might vote for WRA if Stelmach is still at the helm of the PCs. Last year I held my nose and voted Liberal. <yuck>. I was shocked that so many people supported Ed in the last election. I thought for sure he would lose seats.

It seems like Stelmach was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. I think he made the "right" decision.
