From everything I've read on other forums, this game is going to be a bust. Most people are disappointed at clunky space combat, cheesy on foot missions, etc.
And there's no way to explore. It's just mission after mission like a regular MMO and very combat oriented. Everything is combat.
A game like this should be about giving you free access to a giant universe (Eve?) that you are free to explore on your own with cool systems and planets and mysteries and the option to do combat, diplomacy, trade, etc.
Maybe I am just happy that it's sucking because I don't have a key.

Try it before you knock it. I think the people who don't like it are hardcore trekkies that are finding every little flaw (and it's still a restricted Beta, not all features are even available).
Unplayable right now due to lag though

The lag was bad in sector space, but once you got into the instance, it was fine. Near the end it started getting really bad, and now they took it down for 'emergency maintenance'.
I just want to get to Lt-Com before Friday, because then I am gone for two weeks. :/

I'll end up buying it once its released, I love Star Trek.
For the beta-testers is the game on the lines of say Bridge Commander + Elite Force in terms of gameplay?

Two weeks of open beta? That can't be enough time to test a game like this.
Could be cool though. I'll wait and see. Thanks beta-testers!

Some of my thoughts:
Space combat
Fairly well done. Could use some UI/control tweaks, and the controls do take a bit to get used to off the start. Some of the better ship-type combat I've played. From what I hear, the first 12 levels or so are the easy part, and then the missions start to take it to you.
Ground combat
Nothing to write home about; fairly standard MMO fighting. Once again, some tweaking needed. The biggest problem I would say would be how sluggish it feels, mainly due to the animations they are using.
Missions
Many of the starting missions are combat based. Sounds like the missions past 12 get a bit more complex or varied, but I haven't gotten there. I've only done one random mission in the Delta Valonis sector (I think that's the one), so I'm not sure of they mix they have for combat/non-combat. You can also just go out to "deep space" instances and shoot waves of Klingon re-spawns with a group of people. I like how you can finish/get new missions by hailing the person instead of going all the way back to them.
PvP
I have just done a few instanced battlegrounds, but it was fun. Needs some work though. My current "oh sh*t" moment was going to capture a clear zone only to fly in between 3 cloaked Klingon ships. Not sure if more open PvP areas exist.
Exploration
I think much of the exploration will take place in the random instance missions in the Delta Valonis sector.
Player Economy
Didn't explore this too much. There is an exchange where you can put things up to sell to others, but I never did see anything on it. Might be hard to have an economy in a organization that doesn't use money.
Crafting
Doesn't really exist as you know from other MMOs, so people that like fishing or doing leather working for hours on end may want to wait a bit. What they have right now is that you fly around and gather stuff from anomolies in the mission maps. You bring this back and can use that to create stuff at the starbase. Didn't look too closely at what could be created.
Instances/Zones
Many people hate instances, or are afraid an instance will be completely empty. While some loading screen are noticeable, the time taken to actually do missions (go to the place, do mission, etc.) is about the same as other MMOs, maybe less. Most instances I was in had a number of people in them, and chatting took place across all instances, so it didn't fell empty.
If I think of anything else I'll throw it up here. In general, this might be one of those games that you should try before you buy, just in case it's not for you.

That's the problem. How do you try before you buy? Many of the top MMOs are missing this feature. Like play for a free week or a free month etc.
With this beta, all the keys disappear like hotcakes. I kind of want a key but I don't want to put in the effort to find/haggle for one.

You can set it so that you can choose which instance you go into. You can go into a populated one if you want help, or one with few people if you are playing with a team.
I am headed to BC tomorrow, and I only made it to level 8
I am so addicted to this game, that the only thing that made me leave the house, was going to the Jack Singer for the Star Trek: The Music concert.
Have fun in beta guys!
*edit* I just bought a lifetime subscription!! You get to play as a liberated borg!!! OMG!!!

also $240 USD down the drain
I'd never commit to a game for 2 years, just under 2 years is what you need to play to make it worthwile as a 1 year is $120 (so actually, no savings, just get Borg)

well, actually 1 year going by 6 month subscriptions is 171
1 year of month by month is 197
so really, the lifetime subscription isn't that bad of a deal, i retract my last statement about it and will probably do it
