Some people just don't want to travel- I went to University with a girl who had no interest in going anywhere outside of Canada, ever. There wasn't anything that she wanted to see, in person, badly enough to travel for.

Why would you renew it if you don't have a trip planned?
A passport costs around $100 and is good for 5 years; so $20 per year. If I don't travel for 3 years then why shell out $100 and really waste $60 of it if I won't need it.
Add to that the fact that it is a bit of a hassle- I know I had previously let mine lapse. I may not now; now that you need one for the States. But that is only very recent.

at this point, it is not required to have a passport to travel to Jamaica.
I have a brother in law that doesnt have a passport and thats where he holidays all the time. The flight has to be direct though.

Entry requirements for Canadians: Canadian citizens require a passport. Expired passports of up to one year are accepted. A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, as well as proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, is also accepted if the reason for travel is tourism. No visa is required.

Since I turned 17 I've had a valid passport at all times. I'm the kind of guy who likes/wants the flexibility to travel outside of Canada whenever I please. If I find a good flight somewhere and can manage the time off, I'm such a ghost.

I also thought you already needed this. I just assume if I'm leaving Canada and passport will be needed. I've also always had a passport, and couldn't imagine not, it's just normal to me.

Canadian Passports are only good for 5 years? OUCH! Same cost here and they're good for 15 years.
I will be getting my first passport this year at age 38. I've never needed one until now as all of my travles have been within North America.
Hopefully, someday, I'll be able to use it to go overseas.
Not everyone has had the advantages that you may have had growing up dj.

I booked a Vegas trip for December 11 on December 10th at 11PM while drunk. Good thing I had a valid passport.

I'm just as shocked at how many Canadians have travelled so extensively.
It just isn't common down here. I'm envious.

Unless you lost your passport, it isn't a big deal anymore because you can (relatively) quickly renew the passport with some new pictures. Fifteen years seems odd to me because a persons face can significantly change over time and the five year deadline helps keep up with the changes.

There is a different time frame for minors I believe.
I just wouldn't want to plop down 100 bones every 5 years.

Probably has something to do with we don't have a Canadian province with Florida weather in January, our Las Vegas consists of a little casino on an Indian reservation and the only winter golf we play is with Tiger Woods on an Xbox.
We all love Canada but we seriously need to buy another province somewhere down south.

Point taken.
I've always loved North America, and haven't seen enough of it yet. When I'd go to zoos as a kid I was always more fascinated by our own animals (Grizzlies, polar bears, mountain lions, elk etc.) than the exotic animals from Africa and such. I think we have scenery that rivals anywhere on earth. BUT...I find myself wanting to travel overseas more and more as time goes on.
When you factor in history it becomes even more of a desire.

A renewal does cost less but I can't remember how much.
