Default Second Freeway in the City?

Any chance we'll finally establish a second Freeway in Calgary?

Glenmore only has 2 or 3 lights left on it. Is it next?

Calgary should spend 2 billion and put all the roads underground.

Show Boston how its done.

I think freeway is an appropriate term is it not? Highway would designate roads outside of the city, freeways would designate roads inside city limits.

And Glenmore has more than 2 or 3 lights on it.

Let's see from SE to SW they go:

84th street SE
52nd street SE
Barlow SE
30th SE I think?
Ogden Road SE

then the open stretch

37th street SW
Sarcee SW
69th SW

Yeah I completly forgot east of Deerfoot. I still think they can do it...

Also maybe they can finally build a stupid overpass without lights on it. Is this really that hard?

A systems Interchange will cost into the hundreds of millions to do all of the fly over ramps. There is an excellent link on the city website explaining why they don't put in clover leafs anymore. The jist is that cloverleafs take up too much space and as they get buisier become less and less effective. And in high traffic volumes a split diamond intersection is just as effective at passing cars through the intersection especially on roads where one road is significantly larger volumes then the other.

It is interesting to consider what they will be doing in the future.

2nd? Still waiting for our first. Deerfoot should be 5 lanes both ways and those curves should be taken out. Then we would have a freeway.

Thats cool that they actually have that outlined. Now I wish they built a different system for the Silverado - 22x intersection. Those lights are one of the worst lights in calgary if you get stuck wanting to cross 22x.

Speaking of Glenmore. I have to whine a bit.

Heading south on Crowchild and then going onto Glenmore heading east. You go over that big bridge and then you have two lanes that the speed limit is immediately 80. Why oh frickin why does everybody insist on going 40-50?

They need a bigger sign or something.

Whine off..

Cause people like to merge right away on to the far lanes of Glenmore and of Mount Royal Gate on to crowchild. It's sooo irritating. Screws up traffic flow.

Exactly. It screws up traffic flow. Then people complain about the roads. But the road design is fine. It is just used incorrectly.

The worst thing engineers did with Deerfoot is made many of the on and off ramps criss-cross.

The brilliance is blinding.

Let's make a load of cars get on and get off the same short road while trying to get up to 100 km/h.

Memorial, 130th, Anderson/Southland...You look at those roads, and that's where many of the traffic snarls happen. (It also doesn't help that the multi-lane highway widdles down to two lanes at Anderson).

The freeways in Los Angeles for example, while busy, are well engineered. Rarely do you see criss-cross traffic when getting on and off.

Oh, and I suppose we need another couple freeways...

/end rant.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing. I find Deerfoot is great compared to some of the headaches I've seen elsewhere. The Decarie Expressway in Montreal comes to mind. Not only do the ramps overlap, but the road is down in a trench and you need to get up to the top to reach the intersections. Sounds simple enough, but some of the exit ramps are over a kilometre in advance of the actual road you're trying to reach. If you've never driven it before, it's very easy to miss your exit entirely.

Stoney will be the 2nd when it's all done, it's the only one in the city actually built to proper standards for its entirety.

To add to this, there's places in California where they are taking OUT full cloverleafs to add partial ones like Deerfoot/130th, Deerfoot/Country Hills. Lights where there were none before is disappointing, but safer because weaving is eliminated with entering and exiting traffic.

Glenmore can never truly be a Freeway through the City, (for all traffic that is), as the reservoir doesn't allow hazardous goods over it. Major amounts of truck traffic would not be able to use a Glenmore "Freeway" - wait a minute, that would be a good thing!

Speaking of dumb Deerfoot; I'd like to thank the genius engineer who decided it would be a good idea to have the base of the most major road in Town be concrete. Its not like it freezes and thaws here at all.

No it isn't. If we have learned anything from the past it's that what ever the City of Calgary does is going to be incorrect. ie. too small of a road, and then they have to add onto it years later. Just plan correctly and this doesn't happen. But they don't play ahead because they're stupid.
