As of March 1/10 a passport will now officially be required for travel to Mexico
From Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada...
http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pa....asp?id=184000
Quote:
On June 1, 2009, new document requirements were implemented to enter the U.S. by land or water. Also, since January 23, 2007, all Canadian citizens transiting the United States when travelling to and from Mexico by air must comply with entry requirements to the U.S.
For more detailed information, please see the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) web site.
Canadians are not required to carry a passport to enter Mexico. However, in order to avoid delays and misunderstandings, we strongly recommend that you travel with a passport valid for six months after your arrival date. It is the only universally accepted identification document, and it proves that you have a right to return to Canada. Mexican immigration authorities recommend the use of a passport to expedite passage through ports of entry. Canadian citizens arriving in Mexico from a third country without a passport may be denied entry.
Furthermore, even though a passport is not required for entry into Mexico, most airlines departing from Mexico are now refusing boarding to Canadians returning to Canada without a valid passport even if the same airline accepted to board the passenger without a passport in Canada. We strongly recommend that Canadians carry a valid passport for all air travel to Mexico in order to ensure they may board their return flight to Canada. Canadian citizens should be aware that extra costs derived from being denied boarding in Mexico can be considerably high and must be assumed by the traveller.
This requirement will change on March 1, 2010. As of that date, Canadian citizens, including those with dual nationality, will be required to present a valid passport in order to enter Mexico. Canadians without a valid passport will be returned to Canada.
Canadians with a criminal record might be refused entry and returned to Canada on the next available flight. Canadians in this situation should contact the Mexican Embassy in Ottawa prior to making travel arrangements.

Are there any countries left where a Canadian citizen can still travel to without a passport?

Me either... I just assumed you needed a passport to go anywhere these days.

I remember walking over to Tijuana about four years ago and there was absolutely no border patrol of any kind, just walked right into Mexico and a revolving door locked behind me. I wonder if that'll still be the case?

Possibly the Dominican Republic?
I think it's one of those things- I wouldn't want to risk trying to enter a country without a valid passport; especially one where I don't speak the language.

It was still the case as of 4 months ago. I was actually disappointed since I was hoping to get a Tijuana stap on my passport, but there was no security there to stamp it.
I'm guessing that won't change, but you might be stuck in Mexico if you don't have a passport.

IIRC, there is a proper border crossing further south, but they don't mind people wandering into Tijuana proper.

Who doesn't have a passport? I guess it's just me, but I always thought it was one of those automatic things everyone just has for traveling.

Unless it's somewhere further south than Rosarito, there's nothing.

A lot of people don't have passports. You would be surprised at the number of people who have never travelled to another country or the country(s) they travelled to didn't require you to have a passport (ie USA, which until last year you didn't need a passport or Mexico which until this year you didn't need a passport).
Mexico has been a very popular destination for university students (who normally don't have passports yet) because you used to be able to just hop on a direct flight from Canada to Mexico and show up with your birth certificate and a drivers license and they would let you into the country. .... (I myself have done this when I went to Mazatland, Mexico... it was spring break.... went down there with a few buddies).

Being from Newfoundland, and depending upon which part of the rock you're from and depending on how thick your accent is.... thats probably a good idea to be able to prove Canadian citizenship.... anytime anywhere...
I used to know this guy who was from a little fishing village along the coast (the only way in or out of the village was by fishing boat) and his accent was so thick I could barely understand him...
Most times he sounded like he was speaking something other than English.

I don't get how people don't have a passport. Unless they have criminal record related reasons behind it (Even their parents for instance).
I mean how can someone be content not traveling ever. Its not that expensive to go down to the states. I spent less to go down to Salt Lake then I did to go to Vancouver.

Pass the cake please Marie.
Btw... there are a lot of reasons why a lot of people don't have passports. Did you know that if you are behind in your child support, Passport Canada will refuse to issue a passport?

Last summer I went with the enhanced license option (passport expired), but that's only 'cause I drove to Minnesota rather than flying.
