It actually kinda is different. Prospects don't get a restructured contract to perform on an NHL level. If the team doesn't think they are ready, and the prospect threatens to blolt... there have been more teams that have said "see ya" than to offer up the first line role on the big club. And the main difference is that in hockey, if a kid threatens to bolt to Russia, that gives another kid a chance to shine.
In this situation, there's no other kid. This is basically giving Theo Fleury a top line spot at the expense of giving more ice time to a developing Dustin Boyd.
The whole situation stinks to high heaven, and has provided some of the best late night fodder we've seen in years. Even Letterman's sex scandle wasn't this awesome.
And something tells me, more people are watching Conan now, than Conan and Jay together before all this went down, and I doubt Jay is going to be able to reach the same numbers. Good on Conan for going the route he's going.

Kimmel can probably sympathize with O’Brien’s plight.
Last year when it looked like Leno might jump to ABC, speculation was Kimmel would be bumped back an hour to make room for The Tonight Show host.
|
yes but Kimmel is going on his show tomoro, and as has been said Kimmel is very good friends with Carolla and Carolla is with Leno
That group of people make fun of each other all the time. Especially Carolla and Kimmel. So I don't think it was mean spirited, I don't think there was any malicious intent. I think it was just a funny thing that Kimmel did. Whether Jay took it as malicious would be his problem.

Is that why Carolla was on Leno the other night? Doing his whole schtick during "Who Cares What They Think" or something like that?

No kidding. I am making a point of tuning in every single night to see what Conan is going to do or say. The Jack McBrayer appearance and Ricky Gervais interview last night were excellent.
This whole situation has made for some awesome late-night TV. I just hope Conan continues to stick it to NBC every chance he gets.

Who said Carolla was with Jay? I listen to his podcast everyday and he was asked about it yesterday, pretty middle of the road if you ask me, didn't really offer an opinion. Keep in mind Carolla has a pilot in development with NBC so it's not like he's going to piss off the execs before his pilot gets picked up.

i was thinking that as well. i've started watching Conan again after a few months of ignoring his show, and he's probably the funniest i've ever seen him. the Ricky Gervais interview was absolute gold

Well, looks like it's a done deal:
Source: http://www.tmz.com/2010/01/14/jay-le...show/#comments
Quote:
Jay Leno has made a new deal with NBC, which gives him "The Tonight Show" from 11:35 - 12:35 ... sources tell TMZ.
As we first reported, under the contract Jay had been working under, he was guaranteed the 10 PM hour. By moving him to 11:35, NBC was in breach of his contract and needed to negotiate a new deal. That is now done, sources tell TMZ.
So Conan O'Brien is out, and Jay is restored.
|
Such BS. I honestly hope TMZ's info is wrong...but I suspect it's dead on.
Didn't even give Conan a chance.

All that the affiliates said was that Law&Order>>>>>>Leno.
They don't really care who is on after their news as long as the lead-in gives them some viewers. Leno didn't.

NBC President threatens Conan:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_423278.html
NBC Universal boss Jeff Zucker — widely seen as the one to blame for the late night mess NBC finds itself in — has threatened to keep Conan O'Brien off the air for three-and-a-half years if he does not accept the network's offer to host the "Tonight Show" at 12:05.

From some of the magazine articles I've read about him, Jeff Zucker always seemed like the biggest tool around. If they do this, we just might have to stop watching NBC for 3.5 years.

Jimmy Fallon reacts:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_423548.html
"I owe it to you guys to let you know how I feel about this whole thing," Fallon said. "I'm happy to have a job, [...] but it's kind of weird, because these are two of my heroes and two of my friends."
In a sincere evaluation, Fallon didn't choose "Team Conan" or "Team Jay" and instead praised both hosts for helping him become the host of "Late Night."
"Leno gave me so much advice, and so did Conan," Fallon said. "And if Conan didn't kick ass here for 17 years, I wouldn't be here."

If I was Conan, I would take it and then sabotage the show until they had no other choice but to release me.

Wow... NBC just loves wasting money. Didn't they also have Jimmy Fallon on their payroll for a couple of years before he took over for Conan just to prevent him from accepting another job?
I guess it just depends what Conan's contract actually says. Was the time slot stipulated?

If that's true, that would have to be one of the longest holding deals in history, no? Presumably Zucker is saying we will continue to pay you to sit at home so that you can't go on a competing network with your own show.
Back to Carolla, seems kind of similar to how he and his radio station parted ways only with a lot more animosity. Carolla was paid for the balance of 2009 despite being let go in the spring. He used that time and those resources to start up his podcasting empire.
Would Conan still matter if he was iced for 6 months? 3.5 years?
